Stadiums and Arenas of Canada part 2

Winter Olympics will be an expensive proposition. $10 billion minimum would be my guess. Security alone is $1 - 1.5 billion alone I think.

Games have doubled in size since Calgary last hosted so more facilities are needed.

- new ski towers as old ones are obsolete
- new bobsleigh and luge as old ones are obsolete.
- indoor long track speed-skating could still be used but would need significant upgrades for Olympics
- new stadium
- need 3 arenas - 2 arenas for men's and women's hockey and another for figure skating and short-track
- need a large curling centre
- new Olympic Park for all the various skiing events
- media centre
- one or two Olympic Villages

Yeah, this would easily be $10 billion. If the deadline for bidding for the 2026 Olympics is 2017, that only gives Calgary 2 years to get their act together. Will the oil and the economy have bounced back by then? If not, then I wouldn't expect there to be any significant drive within Alberta to host the games. Remember, two-thirds of the cost will be paid by Calgary and Alberta. Most likely, Quebec City will be representing Canada in the bid process anyways, as long as the OC relaxes their height requirements for the downhill skiing.
