Definitely starting to look fantastic. I'm at the point now where I try to avoid looking at it until final day. I want that shock & awe experience once it's done!

Looks like I'm going to have the same problem with the Events Centre!

Well, it's a rumour no longer.......

New Pennington's signage has been applied to the old Smart Set location at Wheeler Park.

With the news of Laura's declaring Bankruptcy do we know if the Champlain Place location will be affected?

Not yet, but they are only shuttering a minority of their stores, so I'm hopeful the Champlain Place location will be safe.

She confirmed that a new location on Acadie is coming. She also said there was another Starbucks in the planning stage, but she wasn't sure where it was going.

My guess would be Mapleton Road, but that's only a guess.

If this is true, then greater Moncton is looking at eight Starbucks locations (Moncton - 4, Dieppe - 4, Riverview - 0)

If there is a Location set for Mappleton I'm assuming it will be built at the old Rock an Roll Motors Location Next to the carwash...

Again, this is a thought experiment as Moncton's Starbucks #8 is still only a rumour, and we really have no idea where in the metropolitan area it will go but:

If it were to go on Mapleton (which seems plausible), I would think it would be built further out, likely in association with either the Mapleton Centre or Mapleton Crossing.

In the Mapleton Centre, it could be built on one of the vacant pads backing on Mapleton Road (good visibility) or on the vacant pad between Goodlife and the Bombay Company. That particular lot is the ideal size, but is well off the highway (but very visible from Wheeler Blvd). The Mapleton Centre lacks a coffee shop/lunch place and this pad is ideally located in the centre of the development.

In Mapleton Crossing, Starbucks could be located right on the corner of Mapleton and Cabela's Court right next to Princess Auto. The current plan is to have a combo gas station and coffee shop in that location anyway. This is a high profile location in a destination retail development and has the added bonus of being visible directly from the TCH, which could be a major bonus with increased traffic from drowsy drivers passing by on the freeway.

To be more precise, Laura is closing only 20 of their 166 locations. This will be completed by September 13th, so you won't have to wait long to hear about the fate of the Champlain Place location but this following snippet from the Globe & Mail is interesting:

Quote:
Mall owner Cadillac Fairview, which housed 39 stores owned by the company, has agreed to provide up to $10-million in restructuring financing, which will help Laura’s to purchase clothes for the fall season.
If Cadillac Fairview is advancing Laura $10M, I imagine that they are getting something in return, and I'm betting that an agreement has been reached ensuring that no CF location will be shuttered, so I'm willing to predict that the Laura location at Champlain Place is safe (for now).

Re: Laura. This is only my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right or wrong and I have no knowledge of the said deal on this matter, but to make loans to companies in dire trouble is just silly. If nobody wants a brand or a store what is the point to tear away the band-aid slowly? You are just postponing a slow death. No sales, no customers; what's the point exactly? I hate loans of any kind to companies who are in trouble, let them fail if they have no place or reason in the marketplace in which they are in. As harsh as my opinion might sound, the business world is not a friendly place, it's a business place...

Long live thriving businesses.

I fail to see your point. This isn't government bailing them out. This is another business looking after there own interests. Pure and simple capitalism at work. If Laura's is restructuring through bankruptcy, then this risk is acceptable by Cadillac Fairview. Many, many companies have restructured through bankruptcy and came out at the other end in better shape. Some don't... that's capitalism for ya!

I don't want to pick on Laura in particular, and I have nothing against them per se, but they are the topic of the discussion.
I must say that CF knows how to invest and there is something in it for them in this deal, nevertheless money is money, whether it's public funds or private funds, I would not loan them a cent. That's my 2 cents. Loans for expansion is one thing, or when a brand has potential... perhaps, but loans because of little revenue and debt; I don't think so. Some Canadian retail brands in the apparel sector are not doing well and it will only get worse before it gets better. Middle class retail (like Laura, Sears is another example) is getting squeezed from the lower-end and upper-end of the market, which are the only tiers that seem to be doing well, this subject has been featured prominently in the news lately. That's it for me on this topic.

We are clearly seeing that retail sales in Canada are not doing well. Best Buy just announced that sales in Canada dropped more than 25% compared to last year while they soared in the US. I wonder if Canadians are just buying online, are just not buying electronics or are just giving Best Buy the cold shoulder? Future Shop or Best Buy, all the same if you ask me. I must admit that I tend to buy alot of my electronics online now. With what's going on with the economy I'm not surprised that they are not spending alot of $ to reflag their store locations from Future Shops to BestBuy. I think we might see BestBuy closing some of their underperforming locations within a year or two. Moncton should be safe, SJ and Freddy not sure, Future Shop in Fredericton was never busy to begin with. In other news, Walmart Canada sales remain strong, sales and customers are up...

I only ever shopped at future shop for CD's and Movies anyway, now they don't carry CD's and have a smaller movie section. Their electronics are over priced in my opinion. I've been in the Moncton Best Buy once.

This is what disturbs me too. Thier movie selection right now is pretty crappy. If it stays that way then Best Buy will be essentially irrelevant to me. It's kinda surprising because the Best Buy in Dartmouth Crossing has a large movie selection. What gives???

In any event, if they don't smarten up, Best Buy's loss will be HMV's gain......

CD/DVD/Blu-ray will be history like vinyl/VHS/Beta. It's all download and streaming now. Get with the times.

Vinyl actually has overtaken CD's in $ sales. I still buy stuff, but not a large amount. I'm a musician so I like to support other musicians etc.

Giant Tiger Adding Second Moncton Location

Giant Tiger, the leading Canadian owned family discount store which sells everything from clothes to groceries, has announced it will open a new store in Moncton next April. The store, which will be located at 135 Main Street, will have approximately 19 thousand square feet of selling space. Thomas Haig, the president of Giant Tigers Stores Limited, says they are very excited to be expanding in Moncton.

Is that the old Zellers location? Google shows the CIBC

*Not sure if this should be in Retail or Downtown thread

Retail thread is fine.

I don't think CBC took over the entire Zellers space, so I'm betting that it will be going into the Superstore Mall proper.

They haven't, there is still a large ''for lease'' sign on the building next to CBC-Radio-Canada.
