Mercedes-Benz acquires naming rights to Falcons’ new stadium

Mercedes-Benz will acquire naming rights to the new Falcons stadium, according to sources familiar with the negotiations, Atlanta Business Chronicle sister publication SportsBusiness Journal reported Friday. The German automaker is expected to sign the contract Aug. 21 and the Falcons will officially announce the agreement Aug. 24, sources said. Falcons officials did not respond to an e-mail requesting confirmation and the deal’s terms. Premier Partnerships brokered the agreement for the team and has been pursuing a 30-year deal averaging in the high teens annually.

Just found out that AMLI will be at our Board meeting Tuesday night and sent over these items in advance of that. They will have the full sized ones with them.

But at least that looks like street level retail on Spring.

Unfortunately, per Midtown Alliance's website, there's only 3,400 SF of retail in that project, so I'm thinking that's the Skyhouse Midtown / Publix at Plaza Midtown treatment with a bunch of window boxes thrown in as an afterthought. Nevertheless, that is already an absolutely terrible and lifeless stretch of Spring as it currently is with the giant Atlantic Center parking deck towering over the world there. Yes, I totally agree with the argument that we should always plan for the future and never accept existing mediocracy as a reason to continue mediocracy into the future...but with Atlantic Center's lifeless parking deck dominating one side of AMLI and 1280 West's lifeless parking deck dominating the other side, any retail space included along AMLI's Spring Street frontage would likely be vacant for decades. That immediate stretch of Spring Street is simply not an environment conducive of pedestrian activity now or in the near future and I see no reason to believe there will be any real-world economic incentive for 1280 or Atlantic Center to retrofit their parking decks with any street level active uses anytime in the next few decades.

Yes, the building across the street will have it, and so will the AMLI building unless something has changed since it was presented to the DRC.

Not sure where the "land of parking decks" comment came from... Spring doesn't have very many parking decks. It's mostly vacant or underdeveloped, and once those lots fill in it will have plenty of activity. That won't happen overnight but it shouldn't take anywhere near a few decades either.

"Land of the parking decks" may be a bit exaggerated, but because of all the vacant land and surface parking lots, the decks seem even worse there. Especially between 14th and 17th St. I'm just tired of seeing it being treated as a building's backdoor or alleyway. That's been changing the last few years thanks to Tech Square, but you still have some developments on the drawing board who want to front W Peachtree or a side street, but throw up a deck on Spring (AMLI and the Medical Tower).

Couple of Questions...

What does NIC mean on the 15th St. plan in the AMLI drawing? And is the plan for 15th to go all the way to Williams? Is there any other street that is being extended in Midtown to Williams or other street?

I think the grid is so important - curious about other plans. Gracias!

I could be wrong, but I think there are or were future plans for a Fifteenth Street bridge over the Connector to be used for commuter buses to access the Arts Center MARTA Station.

I read last year, when all this was just beginning, that AMLI agreed to incorporate the 15th Street extension to Spring, but any additional plans for a bridge, or whatever else, was up to local government and they were quoted as saying they lacked the funds or interest for the near future. I want to say that it is not in the 20 year plan, either.

"NIC" on a construction drawing or sketch usually means "Not In Contract".

One can argue about any kind of government subsidies for sports teams-- but the truth of this deal is that $200M in hotel motel taxes leveraged $1.3B in private investment. These are the facts that few seem to report properly. As a citizen of Atlanta my property taxes did not pay for this stadium (well maybe some related infrastructure costs borne by the city). Cobb County residents on the other hand are paying for 60% of the new Braves stadium--
