Sliding doors but no balcony....... They were thoughtful enough to put in a gate though. No comment on the entrance.

It's on a particularly desolate stretch of Papineau.

The kids who live there all went crazy with their Meccano sets.

Funny, I like Friel Towers. An interesting take on brutalism not often seen in Canada.

Wow, those Friel Towers would put Longueil to shame.

Are they in Sandy Hill as I lived in SH 30 years ago and don't recall them?

Looks like something one would see as a "council estate" in London.

As with Brutalism in general, I don't mind the style so much as I mind the colour and the inelegant way that concrete ages.

Holy fuck! I think this officially tops Laval's monster as the ugliest building in the country (to my knowledge at least).

It kind of reminds me of a taller ugly version of Habitat 67.

So I'm in the Calgary for the weekend, and I've experienced some prime ugliness in the SE today near where I'm staying. Firstly, the weather had been laughably bad, like +5 and pouring. I've yet to get good weather in each of the three times I've been here in the last 20 months. Urggghhhhhh.

Then I went to kill some time at the pretty decent Chinook Mall today, where I noticed this incredible thing looming towards the back of the mall.

Seriously, what is that?

Anyways, I hope to get out and see Nice Calgary tomorrow.

I too don't mind the brutalist thing, like at least they put some effort into giving it that incredulousness.

Sounds like you have bad luck! This has been the coldest and shittiest day of the entire summer. They got snow in the Rockies. Funny enough it rarely rains for that long here. Today was like unending Monsoon sideways rain.

Anyways, the early 2000's Reno of Chinook definitely has its good and bad sides. I think it would be tolerable if they eliminated that ridiculous blue top hat on the office portion and also ditched the 3 column things with burnt out red neon strips in front of the food court. Thankfully there are plans to actually build up the entire surface parking lot in front with a mix of office and condo towers in the future so it shouldn't be too much longer before they either fix, or cover up those elements. They've been renovating the interior as well which I think is actually quite nice. The only part I hope they never change is the 50's era bowladrome in the basement. Somehow the ancient unchanged linoleum floors hold a special place in my heart.

^ haha that must be the case. Last time I was here, I went to the zoo in late April and it snowed. Thing is, I'm a mild weather fan so I really like 15-20 and not much warmer, so tomorrow's forecast looks perfect.

Anyways the newer part of the mall looks really good and feels quite upscale. I liked the curved corridors and the pillars on the second floor. It provides a good contrast with some of the older decor around the food court. Edmonton's good malls in comparison are less signature in design and more modern/minimalist with worse content.
