i've been on vacation, not sure if it's been mentioned here but the Radisson on Portage Ave (owned by Canad Inns) is getting their green canopies either replaced or painted red. perhaps they'ree branding it to look more like the rest of their fleet? if it's painted, hopefully it isn't flaking off like some McD's that I've seen.

The whole thing was red on Monday but then yesterday large parts of it were beige... is this just some sort of rust-proofing measure?

Either way, the 90s teal was due for a replacement.

Nice to see this moving forward (hopefully)... that stretch of Roslyn has been in a weird limbo since the Dennistoun project fell through a few years back.

Yeah, just perusing E6 in the dead-tree addition - like everyday - and what a surprise

The heritage advocates are going to be out in full effect once again. I pity the difficulty Jenny Gerbasi will face having to prioritize which special interest she'll allow herself to be beholden to in this instance: the hardcore urbanists or the unbending heritage advocates.

EDIT: In the event anybody would like to compare the old development proposal, here it is... Perhaps Vike could weigh in, but the court rulings on this have been pretty firm for the better part of 5 years. I can see they've had the good sense not to try and sell the units, but why now? Those are some steep rents!

The red looked hideous when I saw it. Hopefully common sense prevails and it gets changed.

I think the heritage bridge has been crossed. We will see I guess.

There was another far more controversial project down the street that was going to committee in September and had the neighbourhood in a storming rage but apparently it has succumbed.

I really wish they would do something creative with the Radisson... such good blank walls. Maybe paint it some different shades of grey with their corporate green accents... even just the parkade ramp if nothing else.

It is definitely paint on the Radisson on Portage Ave. It left me wondering though if they will be doing something about the previously matching teal coloured glass panels behind the canopies.

The red definitely looks like the final product, just walked by... Maybe they're planning bring it under the canadinns banner.

Also, construction fencing is up around 360 main, at p&m... Has a sign for a glass and glazing company.... Looks like it's really happening.

People are chemically dependent upon smoking. There's a disruption of agency required. Nobody is addicted to sprawl in anywhere the same capacity. They like to throw a ball with their kid in the back yard or have a deck where they can entertain. Yeah, I walked by and the beige is gone, it's solid red. Looks like crap. I was thinking the same thing about CanadInns.

As for bomberguy's idea, I'd say it's a good one. Even in the 80s Portage Ave was livened up with all kinds of signage until the city did its best to stomp it all out... now the strip just looks moribund and there are hardly any signs visible. A few billboards might liven up the joint. (I recall at one point in the 90s there was a rumour published in the WFP that the company behind the giant billboard at Yonge and Dundas in Toronto was also planning to put one up on Portage... needless to say it never happened... too bad.)

There was a proposal brought up many years ago (8-10) i saw on the evening news, and every time i bring this up to anyone everyone asks what i was smoking haha BUT it was a proposal that from portage place to portage and main, all building along portage ave must have a digital screen attached to their building with advertising on it. Cost was to be covered by the property owner but it be brought back in with advertising 'rental'. There was even a concept drawing made up and it looked great.

They were trying to achieve a times square look to down town.....never heard of it again. Am i the only one who's heard of this still lol

^ I don't remember anything like that with billboards, but I do recall a building lighting plan from around that timeframe where the Downtown BIZ was trying to encourage property owners to put up lights to illuminate their facades. Some company from Quebec was brought in and there were renderings done. If you really dig deep on this forum you can probably find some discussion about it.

Personally I'd love to see more signs and billboards on major streets like Portage and Main. It could give downtown landlords a bit of a boost too... for instance, you could have a store like MEC make a few extra bucks with a billboard on the roof, that kind of thing.

Arent those electronic billboards regulated here where they cant have moving pictures? Because adult drivers in Winnipeg are too stupid to drive and see a billboard with a moving image on it? Which is odd since I dont think the Vegas strip or Times Square is over-run with car accidents.

No rkspec you are not crazy, I can't remember if it was CentreVenture or the DowntownBiz that was looking at a "Times Square North" proposal about ten years ago, this morphed into the Downtown lighting plan that was prepared by a firm that did the urban lighting in Montreal. Small bits of it have been implemented but very few businesses invested.
I remember one of the things pointed out by the Montreal firm regarding the Times square proposal was that you had to have total buy in on all the buildings - otherwise it would look piecemeal - a flashy sign here and there looks tacky, a real mass in high concentration looks deliberate.
