Pure speculation, but maybe they were waiting for the Events Center to get the go ahead? Since today is the day that Council will apparently decide to commit to the project, maybe the 55 developers got an early assurance that the project was a go?

They had quite a heavy advertising presence on social media (including SSP) for several months but that has recently stopped. If I was to guess, they probably needed to sell a certain number of condos to proceed with the project. Perhaps they met their objective and things are a go. Maybe that's why the advertising stopped.

We should soon know if that's the case or not......

According to their website, there are not many suites availble... It says on each separate condo, 1 left, 2 left etc. I have been in contact with the owners on and off, so I sent them an email asking if they had plans to break ground soon, so we shall see.

Is there anyone who is good enough with photoshop or god knows what program to use, to take a picture of downtown Moncton and place 5-5 in there, just to see the impact it would have on the skyline?

Well, between FiveFive, the events centre and the preliminary work on Downing Street, next year could be quite an exciting one for downtown Moncton!

I'm afraid you're out of luck. The website doesn't have any decent renders, so I have nothing to go on. If anybody else can do it, I'd like to see it just as much.

I attempted twice but the angle just isn't right. From the rendering angle, there wouldn't be much difference in the skyline from the Riverview side as the Marriott would block 6 of the 8 floors.

That actually looks fantastic, street front presence, parking in the rear, which will please those who like the parking. It will really bring a change to that area, a well needed change, now if they can find someone willing to redevelop Moncton High, and a few other places along that stretch, we could be looking at another beautiful area downtown for people to visit.

Excellent development for that corner! The neighbourhoods surrounding downtown need more of these pedestrian friendly developments. They help in extending the downtown further North of the Main and St-George area.

Next year is turning out to be pretty busy construction wise downtown!

Interesting enough, this finally comes up just days after the arena announcement, coincidence? Or am I just over thinking things like always. Also they must be planning to start construction soon if they are planning an opening for 2016.

I'm pretty sure that in this particular case that the timing is just a coincidence.

I like Zio's design BTW. It looks like a Greek or Italian village. The street presence, the outdoor seating on the corner and the hidden parking in behind are just what the city needs. The design is exotic for Moncton, but most new developments that have been proposed recently (like Fivefive and the events centre) have been somewhat exotic. Maybe this should be Moncton's signature - urban eclecticism (you never know what you'll see whenever you turn a street corner).

Moncton Awards Contract for First Phase of Downing Plaza Project

Work will begin on a project connecting Moncton's Downtown to it's riverfront in the next two weeks.

At Monday night's regular public meeting, Moncton City Council awarded Dexter Construction the contract to begin work on Downing Plaza Reconstruction Project. The construction company will be responsible for the first phase of this project, which involves the creation of a one-way street from Main Street to Assomption Boulevard.

The recycled asphalt will be removed next spring. Concrete slab, granite curb and paver stones, decorative lights, benches and trees will be installed. This project is worth $3.3 million over two years.

I heard a presentation on the project a while back and it was mentioned that a huge amount of grading needed to be done. That, and underground infrastructure.

It's actually a very good start because they are doing one whole half of the street. Phase one will give them a good start on the street, they will have the whole blue cross side finished by next fall. It is disappointing that they aren't going to do it all at once, but we have to take what we can get, at least this is a start, I just hope that they haven't given up on this project and Plan on just going with a small one way street.

From the rendering above it looks like a small one way street with no open space in the middle with a road that barely connects to Assumption. Am I seeing this wrong? If this is the plan - well, it sucks.

It's phase one of the plan. Phase two would be creating the other lane and the plaza in between. Hopefully there won't be too much delay between this phase and the second phase.

Phase three is the extension of the public space to the riverfront, with the viewing platform over the river.

This is the one thing that makes me chuckle - just about every public project in this province proceeds in multiple phases over several construction seasons, usually with some delay while additional funding is secured. I know the province is broke, but this sort of strategy only ends up costing more in the end.

Classic examples include the Mapleton overpass at Wheeler. That took about five years while they did different components each year, usually with some demolition of the previous year's work before they could proceed with the new phase. The Dieppe/Harrisville interchange with Veterans Highway is following a similar trajectory. Everyone knows what needs to be done, but the province dithers with the widening of Dieppe Blvd done last year, the reconfiguring of the southbound off ramp from route 15 done this year and yet no commitment to actually widen the God damned overpass itself. It's bloody frustrating!
