Yes. Commonwealth is far from a dilapidated shithole and saying that it is rapidly approaching the end of its life is a false allegation driven by a desire to start another cycle in the vicious circle of ‘Keeping Up With The Jones’. Just because a stadium loses its shine and yet another technological advancement in Scoreboard Technology is made does not make a stadium antiquated. Also, atmosphere tends to poorer in newer stadia as the vocal fans in the cheap seats usually can’t afford the move.

Of course I want the new arena in Calgary to be better than Edmonton's and the stadium to be better than Regina's but those two combined are over a billion dollars so realistically we're probably going to have something nice, but not spectacular, despite what Ken King says. Plus, this is going to be a proposal only, not final plans.

Those conservative arenas are still some of the nicest in the NHL. Both have all the toys you would expect from a modern arena. No shame in that.

I'm looking forward to seeing the proposal and possible renders for the new Calgary arena/stadium next week. There has already been substantial talk of such a project for 1-2 years in Calgary so I suspect something this big will take a minimum of another 8 years before it comes to fruition especially in a province that is loathe if give money to pro sports teams...see 0$ in provincial money given to the new Edmonton arena.

new Winnipeg Stadium - first concepts released to the public in 2004 or 2005 at Assiniboine Downs; stadium opened in 2013

New Regina Stadium - talks of a domed stadium first floated to the public in 2007; stadium soft opening in 2016

New Ottawa Stadium - talks of a new Ottawa team and stadium in either 2006 or 2007; new stadium opened in 2014.

New Hamilton Stadium - talks of new stadium as part of Toronto bid for Pan Ams in 2008; new stadium opened in 2014.

New Edmonton Arena - talks of a new arena first started in 2008; new arena will opens in 2016.

When did talks of a new arena begin in Calgary? Wasn't it back in 2009 or 2010? The proposal has only grown in size and scope since then with the addition of a stadium and "community" surrounding the sports facilities. Given the enormous amounts of money involved, I suspect this project will have the longest period of time between faint public rumblings to completion.

Nice looking arena Moncton! Looks to be right size for the city and will be preeminent entertainment venue for the province.

Never say never, but I doubt MLS will ever award an expansion franchise to Calgary. Not with so many American cities who have already built or are willing to build new soccer-specific stadiums ahead of them in line - San Antonio, Indy, Sacramento, 2nd LA team, Minny and Miami.

Moncton Events Centre



- Construction starting in Spring 2016, opening in September 2018
- seating capacity 9,088 with up to 10,500 seats available for concerts
- 15 corporate boxes
- game day restaurant
- Wildcat's Boutique store (for the Moncton Wildcat's of the QMJHL)
- concessions (to be determined)
- meeting space for small conferences.

These interior renderings look kind of sparse, but I'm sure the finished product will be a lot different, especially once all the stores and concessions are sorted out.

That's quite the project. ^ The city I live in has a population of 17,000 ish. built a new arena in 2013. Full bowl 2000 (originally 1800) seats Expandable to 4000, they over built the entire building and built it so they could add an upper bowl for future growth. Team facilities are top notch, The city want's to attract an AJHL team so they built an arena that could host a WHL team to make that happen...for now its houses a junior B team (A very successful one champs 5 years in a row), it has a great Center hung Scoreboard. Next year they are breaking ground on a 350 seat practice/community rink right beside it. At the same time they will add 6 Cooperate suites and a restaurant/lounge with an arena view on both sides. Don't underestimate what a new arena can do for a city. "Imperial oil place" has attracted a ton of big artists Machine gun kelly,Snoop dog, Tragically hip, Hedley, Emerson drive and Counting crows, off the top of my head. It hosted the keystone cup this year. A couple of king of the cage fights have come our way. Nothing like that is possible without a modern arena that can handle having structures hanging from the roof. I know It's not a major arena but I figured it was worth posting

The civic motto is Resurgo (Latin for "I rise again"). We are, sometimes, but I suppose it's better than the alternative, and nobody is ever truly rational.

Perhaps, but the CMA population is only around 150,000 and our corporate sector isn't that big. I think the developers are being rightfully cautious about this.

I don't think the arena will be better than the Rogers arena, and don't really care if it is. It will likely be something nice and modern, and very solid.... I've heard they are looking for something similar to XL centre in Min, or the Console Energy centre in Pittsburgh. The one-up will come as a whole package with the new stadium and residentail around it

It sounds like the stadium design will be something similar to Ottawa's new stadium, which I've been a big fan of.

The 'partially funded field house' is the stadium. The city has already allocated $200 million toward that. With $200 Million going to a new field house, you can fold that into a nice new stadium very easily.

Personally, I think the whole idea about funding for the field house was planned a long time ago as a way to avoid an outcry about funding toward a new stadium....but I'm fine with it.
