(Also Vancouver certainly does not have the best weather in Canada. Any sane person wants at least 3 months of snow in winter.)
Not to mention sunlight.

Nah, that thing by the Calgary Tower.

You well get a lot of hate because of the jealous nature people feel for Vancouver. It is obviously the best city in Canada. Certain people do not like to admit this fact! The weather the location, the mountains, the ocean, the fact some people do not think it is a coastal city.
Taking the bait here, but you know that's a very subjective opinion, right? I do love Vancouver and enjoy visiting, but to me the best city in Canada is Montreal

People are allowed to criticize a building without being stoned to death. Add me to those who don't have a lot of love for that building. Tons of other projects going up in Vancouver that I do like, though!

The rest of Canada only understands tall, boxy, uniform towers. Something to be said of a best city in which its greatest attributes rest on its surroundings

You wouldn't think in this modern age mountains would be much of an impediment however, the insular comments flow free whenever a Vancouver centred critique arises.

I'm honestly not sure if you're attacking or defending Vancouver.

In Vancouver we have the choice. Either stay in the city and enjoy no snow on streets and nice non-freezing temperatures OR drive 15 mins up the mountains you you have meters of snow and -10 Celsius. Vancouver is the only city in Canada where YOU decide which weather you want to enjoy and you can switch in between two climates several times a day.

It's also the only city (apart from Victoria and some other nearby cities) where you don't get to live in the metre of snow and -10 degrees. If you're like me and don't drive then you're in trouble. Either way I don't want to have to commute to get to decent weather.

This isn't the weather thread though, so we should stop discussing Vancouver's troubles with winter. (At least you have okay summers. A bit dry for my liking, but fairly cool.)

That's Le Germaine. The glass tower is office, the prodema panelled one is hotel and the top section is residential. When I first saw the renderings I wasn't crazy for it but I really like the finished product. I think it's better than the Vancouver proposal. Besides the hole in the centre they have nothing in common.

This is a much more flattering and realistically coloured image of Le Germain.

and a closer up of ground level...

All in all, it's actually a pretty cool tower. It's a bit clunky but it's also super funky, I would miss it if it weren't around. That said, I don't mind the Vancouver one either. It's footprint is going to be huge and I think Vancouver can use a bit of that.

Boosters like what they already have. If their city only builds boxes, than non-boxes are inferior. If they have to compare a building to something as obscure as "elephant cankles" in order to criticize it, then there probably isn't much wrong with said building. My main problem with that Vancouver proposal (along with One-Pacific) is that's joining that tired wavy aesthetic now copied in tons of cities that aren't Miami/Sydney.

Surely you can see that it's elephantine in its sheer girth! The cankles analogy is due to the hole in the middle making two cankles.

Don't bother. He's just another one that tell the good from the bad unless it's blatantly obvious. (Like on the cover of something). It's all about massing instead of quality.

A) I think that's a less flattering angle.

B) That's definitely a less realistic colour. That's what it might look like for half an hour every evening. My pic is what the light is like from 11 to late afternoon.

I have to agree with those that don't like it. That Le Germain hotel looks horrible, it feels dated, like 1980's dated. the top section is the worst part.

If you got rid of that...thing plunked on top, the two separate bottom portions would make for a pair of nice little towers.

When I think of all the great things about Vancouver, the fact that some people do not think it is a coastal city is certainly right up there at the top of the list.

I was talking about the first pic being more realistic in colour, which it is. Your photos are very greyed out, I know that I don't see the world as colour-unsaturated, no contrast. The first one of yours is more like the real thing though.
