Hey folks, not from Calgary ( N of Edm actually) but very curious as to the state of the oil and gas sector in the downtown Calgary area and wanted to hear any first or second hand accounts, good or bad? All I have been hearing is negativity ( of course media driven) with respect to job cuts, downsizing etc but what I'm curious about is

a) if the above is accurate, is there a significant need for all the towers currently under construction or have they all been pre-leased long term so the companies have no way of backing out anyway?

b) if the job losses are occurring, are folks simply swtiching fields and seeking /finding employment in other sectors? Much appreciated

I have spoken with a ton of folks in the Edmonton region and contractors are getting walloped!!! Several contracts have evaporated completely while other contractors simply hold out on their inflated prices, thinking that things will come back. Further and more worrisome are the families that have now been w/o work for 6-12 months.....

Others have simply switched from oil/gas back into forestry related work.....

thanks all

By the way, love this tower....

A) None of the current office tower construction is purely speculative. Brookfield has a large locked-in space commitment from Cenovus.

B) There is job loss, but a lot of people are still in severance package honeymoon phase. Over the next year anxiety will rise if things don't change.

Nope, immigrated to Canada in 1997 at age 33. I know who the Friendly Giant is but never saw the show

I missed out on Codco too, and managed to make it to Toronto just after KITH was cancelled. At least I got to be on Speaker's Corner...

Looks like they started installing the metal brackets on the N/W corner.

Brookfield Place - 247 meters - 56 storeys

The curve of the corners is starting to get quite pronounced...

Will definitely reserve judgement until there is a lot more installed, but first impression is that it reminds me of the cladding on WTC1. Not entirely sure if that is good or bad yet?

Just a reminder about the glass. This is some of the most expensive glass in the world (coming from Germany). The glass will also be curved (I believe) as opposed to flat glass like what is used in the Bow (giving the illusion of being curved).

Again, just a balls to the wall, no dollar spared building. Can't wait until it's done.

Sweet, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the glazing turns out on this one. With it being fairly minimalist design, success or failure will lie in the details.

It looks fairly reflective in this photo, but hopefully thats just the photo/conditions.

First curved section going in now. Looks great. Glass is very high quality looking, very transparent. Pic on my Twitter feed @joshyyc

Holy shit that looks good! Very transparent too, perhaps what City Centre was supposed to look like according to those renderings. This could prove to be close to the rendered shots too.
