Depends on how much you're willing to spend. The IOC is only playing lip service to making the Olympics more affordable for host cities and I expect that $5B or so is the absolute minimum that any Winter Olympics will cost with Summer being about twice that. Sochi and Beijing are the new standards of excess and payouts to the IOC that are expected.

24-year old facilities will not be tolerated in the gilded age of the Olympiad.

Photo update of the Seasons on the Boulevard (formerly known as Seasons on Denver Street). On a side note, I will be interviewing the rest of the candidates and getting them to talk urban development with me once the primary is over. Remember if you like a post to click on an ad

136 East South Temple renovation

Looks like the remodeling of the facade of 136 East South Temple (formerly called University Club Bldg.) has started.

Not sure the sorta Classical new base shown in brochure is successful although perhaps it is viewed as a gesture towards the Alta Club next door.

I just saw this:

http://www.ksl.com/?sid=35748404&nid=148...create-7000-full-time-jobs-over-10-years

Vivint, SolarCity to create 7,000 full-time jobs over 10 years

We know that Vivint will be expanding in Utah County but SolarCity doesn't state where but they do offer this tantalizing part in the article:

Quote:
About 7,000 new full-time positions, boosted by incentives approved by the Governor's Office of Economic Development, were announced, including energy service provider SolarCity, which plans to open a regional corporate headquarters in Utah that could create 4,000 jobs and $94 million in capital investment, GOED announced.
The reason that this is tantalizing is that 222 was estimated to have cost $100-$110 Million. With $94 Million in capital investment, this would generally mean a highrise building near or over 20 stories. I don't see how they can get that large of a capital investment with a campus style building.

Maybe this is one of the tenants in 111 or possibly 151. It could also be a new tower completely or still, it could be a campus style complex built in the burbs.

"I welcome SolarCity to Salt Lake City," said Mayor Ralph Becker. "We are excited to have SolarCity choose us for a regional headquarters. Their work will help us achieve our aggressive goals to have clean, affordable renewable energy in the region."

SolarCity has begun recruiting for roles in its temporary downtown location at 175 East 400 South, 7th Floor, Salt Lake City. Those interested in applying can visit http://www.solarcity.com/careers/.

the nation's #1 solar power provider, today announced it will open a regional corporate headquarters in Salt Lake City. The company is hiring at a temporary location initially as it scouts for a location for a large corporate campus.
This looks like it might be a campus but hopefully it is an urban campus along the likes of Goldman's plans, even though they are in multiple buildings, they are calling it a campus.

Here is to the hope of this being a new building/buildings coming soon to Downtown SLC.

It's great that many office campuses are finally starting to move back to downtowns. What's happening with Amazon in Seattle in kind of mind blowing.

"Seattle could have the nation’s highest concentration of office space occupied by a single business if Amazon fills all the buildings it has lined up."
http://www.seattletimes.com/business/rea...ock-towers-to-its-seattle-office-empire/

It's been my understanding that the chamber and governor's office have been trying to get a solar giant downtown for quite some time. In fact, when I was in one of Luke Garrott's classes, 3 years ago, this was the subject of the neighborhood council at the gateway when the Governor's Business Development Guy (the dude in charge of poaching businesses from other states) came to visit and share some of the long term goals that state was lobbying specifically for downtown.

Outside of all the rhetoric to the contrary, many Republicans understand how lucrative green energy jobs are...

I don't think so. It's already an embarrassment to the IOC that literally all the other countries except China and Kazakhstan dropped their bids for 2022. Beijing is the first city to get both Summer and Winter Olympics and it isn't because they wanted it to happen...

Things are changing in the world. This website is a great snapshot for that. We've seen the emerging world become a place for mega projects and skyscrapers and we've seen them fall for spending way too much to try and show the developed world that they've arrived. Outside of India things are not looking so good for emerging markets.

In developed countries you have rising costs across the board in healthcare and other social programs mixed with pretty lack luster GDP in Europe even by the best in class like the UK and surprisingly Spain.

Now lets couple that with the fact that the USA is extraditing FIFA top brass on corruption charges where we can see trails of corruption bread crumbs leading to the decisions to send the World Cups to the BRICs and then the current situation and the challenges moving forward for these organizations becomes a lot more clear.

I think the best thing the IOC could do to show good faith in turning this Titanic away from an iceberg would be to showcase how a city could do an Olympics with great infrastructure and facilities, protection and respect for LGBT and multicultural athletes with as little money expended as possible.

Even if SLC rebuilt every facility it constructed in 2002 and remodeled every facility it remodeled for 2002 it wouldn't cost over 2 billion. There hasn't been THAT much inflation since 2002!

I think if the IOC doesn't fix their —, we're gonna see alternatives break through (Does anyone care about the World's Fair anymore?). The PAN AM games that just took place in Toronto have arguably been a new benchmark in the event's prestige. Even the FIFA Women's Soccer in Canada which has been treated like a joke by FIFA, blew up everyone's low expectations with how well it was received and watched on TV.

The world is changing but with events that don't happen for 7 years there tends to be a bit of a lag.

Also, I'd like to add that the reason we're talking about this right now is because Boston withdrew their bid from the Summer Olypmics which of course ups the odds of the US Olympic Committee allowing a Winter Olympic bid. But this is also a sign of the times. This is a major city who had to withdraw because of a lack of support from its citizens for a Summer Olympics. I think my former argument stands that austerity and slim budgets for building highways and healthcare is a real mood killer for hosting Olympics, but I also think the brand has taken a major beating because of their event location choices. Did you read about how Brazil wants athletes to swim in the Ocean outside of Rio where two teaspoons of water when ingested will more than likely cause illness because of the high concentration of sewage? Boston knows they're better than that.

We should probably move this conversation here:

Great news about Solar City -- I'd love to see them with some kind of signature tower downtown--not a new tallest necessarily, but their own tower that really sends a message about the future of solar power. That it's viable, that it's a good investment, that it's here to stay. Not just leasing space in another building. In any case, I like that it's "green" and its choosing SLC for a regional HQ. That's great.

I think this is a blow and bad news news for the possible 2026 games in Salt Lake. I think with Beijing getting the 2022 games, this just shut the door on SLC getting them in 2026. With Beijing having the 2008 games and now 2022 there is no way the IOC is going to want the very next winter games to be in a city that have hosted them in the past as well. With this I think this just opened the door for Reno/Tahoe to have the best chance to be the U.S. Representative for the 2026 games.

Why not? Generic apartment names for generic looking apartments. Makes sense.

There is a very recent article about Solar City in Slate. Sounds liike they might need operational spaces as well as office space but obviously depends on just what "regional headquarters" means.

SolarCity expects to create thousands of new jobs over the next ten years, primarily in professional services functions such as accounting, finance, human resources, legal, marketing and sales support.
This sounds like a full professional suite. More likely to be found in office buildings as opposed to industrial complexes.

They are hiring currently in a temporary location at 175 South West Temple on the 7th Floor. That building itself was also recently sold.

Because of the services and functions of the positions listed for SolarCity, I would expect them to locate somewhere downtown. Either in their own building(s) or as tenants of other buildings such as 111 and 151.

Since they made the announcement, hopefully we will hear more information about this and the possible location(s) in the coming weeks/months.

Also, they will have 4,000 people at least. They have provisions in place for options over 4,500 employees.

Lastly, SolarCity has approximately 12,000 employees world wide. Their SLC location will support 4,000 or more employees in the next few years.

For some rampant speculations, it is possible that 2016 will see even more tower cranes around:

AUC, 151, 111 (finishing), CCH, Regent Hotel, SolarCity, APS Building and Cascade (hey, we can hope).

Minus the Cascade, all of these will be over 300' based on current information (SolarCity is the unknown but I am just listing it as a possible single occupant building with ground floor retail).

The question will be of the above, will any go above 400' and if so, by how much? Will we get a new tallest from this list or is there another set of projects that we aren't yet aware of?

All I can say is 2016 should be a big year for crane watching.
