^^^ Add to that sailing in Kingston as a poster alluded to in another thread. They hosted the event for MTL 1976 and have the facilities in place.

Pan Am sailing was held in Toronto Harbour. I don't see why Olympic sailing could not be held in Toronto as well. There are many other port/yacht facilities in the GTA that could be used.

Kingston hosted the 1976 sailing events simply because of geography - it was the closest suitable location to Montreal.

Most likely, however, there will be no expansion at all, and the NFL will continue to hold existing cities to ransom by the threat of moving to Toronto or elsewhere.

Anyway, I suspect it will all be academic. Once the excitement from the PanAms dies down, there will likely be little appetite for an Olympic bid.
You must have short term memory or are too young to remember, but London already had an NFL team - NFL Europe didn't work then and it will NEVER come back. Btw, If TO gets the Olympics - I'm moving to Siberia - Alberta will NEVER be able to keep up with our transfer payments to bail out the financial debacle it will become....

You must have Alzheimer's, or are you just being daft? You know bloody well London never had an NFL team. Any wanker knows the difference between the NFL and NFL Europe, yea?

When Ontario gets transfer payments, its just getting it own money back. This debate has been settled years ago friend.Of course the way oil prices are going, you might have to move to Siberia anyways.

Sports like soccer and water boat sports have always traditionally been spread out and that won't change. London hosted soccer matches in Scotland and Wales I believe. Soccer might stretch as far as Ottawa/Montreal since the field is so deep but what about about the CFL in that instance?

But for logistics and security reasons you have to have some type of zone concept. If your going to have aquatics at UofTM then other stuff has to be there too, because you are going to lock down that area way more then what was done for the Pan-Ams.

So its either you cluster or you link everything with rapid transit. Whatever is cheaper in putting in BRTs/LRTs for the games (and possibly taking up road space) or you build cluster zones. The IOC might talk about a rebranding of how the games are done but the security issue still remains.

^^ Probably safe to say that the Jets will get to use their cool scoreboard thingy more than the Leafs will. I'd also bet that this will spread to the rest of the teams fairly quickly too.

I would like to see the Olympics back in Canada. I hope the country and Ontario can get their debt obligations under control until then.

Even factoring in the money spent for facilities of the Pan Am games this will be a $10 billion event quite easily, maybe closer to $15 billion

$1.5 - $2.0 billion on security
$1 billion for Olympic Stadium
$1 - $2 billion for improvements to existing structures like the aquatics centre to make them Olympic worthy, and in some cases, replacement of existing structures;rentals of temporary stands
$1 billion for Olympic Village and media centre plus improvements.
hundreds of millions for concerts, opening and closing ceremonies
billions for transit improvements

I'd only bid if the USA can't make a bid.

Can't see the IOC giving Canada 2 games in a timeline before the USA held one.

USA hasn't hosted since 2002, while Canada is 2010. I can't see the same country at the level of Canada getting both the winter and summer games in the span of 14 years.

Would be impressive and awesome, but I think that fact detracts from any canadian bid. If the USA doesn't bid, then go full steam.

They aren't going to build a second veledrome in Toronto because Milton is too far. Theres only two veledromes in ALL of North America, nevermind 2 in the GTA.

Rowing is going to be held in St. Catharines as its course is world renowned and has been there for 75 years. You can't just plop a rowing course anywhere, there needs to be propper current for it.

Soccer is going to need at least 4 venues so Hamilton comes back online for that. (Rio is using 5 venues in 5 different cities spread much further apart than the GTA)

Odds are Copps Colliseum will be used, as well as the Hershey Centre and GM Centre. They aren't going to build new arenas in Toronto that become white elephants just for the sake of fans not having to travel far.

Rio's events are spread over 4 different clusters.

Having said that, the majority of the games would still be held in Toronto propper.

You can bet the pronvice and the feds are going to use this to push High speed rail in Southern Ontario, as well as Electrification of the GO lines thats already supposed to be completed within the decade adding 15 minute off peak trains. This will make it eaiser and efficient for people to get to various events. As well as the much talked about LRT and subway expansion in Toronto.
Yup, like I said events like rowing are often held far from the city when those are the best venues. Whitewater rafting was in the Haliburton area for the Pan Ams, and were proposed to be there for 2008. And since the velodrome is in Milton anyway it seems obvious to use it again. But those are all cases of locations being used because it makes sense for the events, not favours for other cities.

It's not as if it hadn't happened in the past.

Montréal hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics, and then Calgary got the 1988 Winter ones...

To be pedantic, there are only two velodromes of the quality required to host world-class events. There are dozens of outdoor or concrete or tight-tracked ones, or ones with no spectator areas or poor lighting.

I realize that, but I also think the scope of interested countries that want to host the games have exploded since then, although I think the potential has also shrunk in recent years due to plenty of governments not wanting to cover the high cost of hosting, but this is more of a recent phenomenon.

Essentially the Olympic bidding process in the last 20 years has changed dramatically.

Would be neat to see, considering how many semi-big/big events Canada has hosted in the last 5 years. 2010 Winter Olympics, 2015 Women's World Cup, 2015 Pan-Am Games. Hope Toronto gets the games, I just see the IOC wanting to spread out the games a bit more geographically and amongst different countries.

You're seriously equating NFL Europe - better described as NFL D-league - with the NFL?

Boston was the best USOC candidate. LA could bid for every Olympics if it wanted to, but it isn't a slam dunk to win.

So with it looking like Toronto is poised to submit an expression of interest for the 2024 Olympics, there is an obvious gap in the lineup of facilities that would be part of these Games, should they be awarded: A properly-sized Olympic stadium for track/athletics/ceremonies.

Obviously, the ideal outcome would be a stadium that provides some legacy use to Toronto and/or Canada.

So - my question to the board is this: What should that legacy be?

Should it be:
A) The Blue Jays
B) The more popular of TFC / Argos get their own, larger stadium, the other keeps BMO
C) The Jacksonville Toronto Jaguars of the NFL (or other hypothetical NFL team)
D) Other

Also, should it be a new stadium on a new site, a new stadium at the SkyDome site, or a gutted/refurbished SkyDome?

I'd like to hear the thoughts on this from you guys.
