So you read the article too then? It was terrifying reading the description of how it will go down, from it starting with barking dogs, to the first rumblings, then the mudslides and culminating with the Tsunami. What is terrible is that earthquake proofing only seems to apply to buildings built after the code was created (At least in the Portland example). We don't even have preliminary warning systems like the Japanese either who at least can detect the low frequency first wave. People here will have mere minutes to escape if they aren't already buried. The cities of the Pacific NW are essentially living on borrowed time.

Few places aren't living on borrowed time. No place is safe from extraterrestrial incursions.

Most of Canada is safe from anything short of an asteroid impact.

Really, to what extent can you even prepare for a 9.0 earthquake in the middle of a heavily populated area... with something that destructive, even the best preparation in the world won't stop or really do much to mitigate mass deaths and carnage.

I just read that article actually, there are a ton of documentaries on TV about it already. The best we can do here is have a comprehensive disaster plan, and have drills like they do in Japan. One thing that probably hasn't been planned is where will people go if suddenly hundreds of thousands of people here and maybe millions in the US are displaced, and that's a likely scenario.

Most of the rest of us could get hit by a Tornado or something, but that's not even close to the scale of a megathrust earthquake lol. Flooding is a concern for a lot of us too, Calgary will get hit pretty bad one day if we don't come up with some sort of diversion plan, 2013 was more like a 1 in 60 flood, so it will flood much worse at some point. Of course the biggest threat is probably Yellowstone, we're all fucked if that thing blows lol.

Sweet view from there, looks like a summer Chinook arch. Too bad it's been so stormy the last few days, early summer can be like that though.

Yes, but never underestimate the ability of people to take a comment completely out of context...

This article isn't news at all. I see this type of thing around twice a year every year.
Living in North Van might be the best bet?

Yeah, the North Shore is gonna be just as screwed as Richmond and South Delta, just in different ways. Further inland is where you're gonna want to be.

Here is the liquefaction risk map for Vancouver. As far as tsunamis, the risk for Vancouver is essentially non-existent <2m and it is not too serious for Victoria either <5m.

Those TO shots from New York State are pretty cool. Not a lot of skylines are visible from 60+ km away.

Slightly related question: going to Hong Kong in a few months. Anyone know if you can see Shenzhen from HK? It's only about 35 km away but all research I have seen so far suggests "no".

You can't see Shenzhen from HK Island or Kowloon (I think), but you can definitely see SZ from the New Territories.

Nobody is safe from Justin Bieber. Sooner or later he's going to come back.
