I'm starting to like the stantec tower less and less. Especially this new version. It's a modern commie block on top of an ordinary office building.

^ Elise is grasping at straws a little there.

Sure there may be some bad neighbours, but plenty more bad infill builders

Tegan should shut up and walk her talk

J'Lyn Nye did a stay-cation downtown recently, listen to the show first...including the callers and then read/discuss.

Certainly lessons to be learned, improvements to be made, but good god...

I'd agree with J'Lyn after listening to her yesterday, sure some of it was out there but that's typical radio to get the conversation going.

Downtown is getting much better, but it doesn't compare to other districts in Canada or even that of Whyte ave. I've done the staycation in Edmonton's core a few times and have enjoyed it. When compared to the majority of North American centres Edmonton's is improving and dare I say for and actual core is making major strides to be one of the better centres around. What we have to remember is that it isn't going to be like Whyte ave because the CBD has a lot of office spaces. But the streets like 104th and Winston Churchill square are hubs of activity that help on off hours.

One point I liked about J'Lyn's comments is the importance of street interaction (i.e. windows of pubs/restaurants) that open onto the street. Rice Howard has a very nice foundation/example to build upon with Craft and Sherlocks. Ice District should help even more with putting pressure on others to ensure interaction. The public plaza has the opportunity to become a modern square with nice restaurant areas . . . I picture pubs like in European squares.

However, as it stands today there is a lot of work that can still be completed and built upon. Our downtown is not a tourist draw yet, and has some major hurdles still to overcome, but look what has been achieved in a mere 5 years...and look what will be achieved in another 2. Progress.

I'd rather be having the "is downtown dead" debate after the new RAM, new arena and Ice district, new KR tower and new condos are completed. Yes it's much better than before but is still in a state of flux.

Hopefully the new hotels don't just displace old hotels, and the downtown room count can grow again. That will help more than 10 times as many condos.

I am aware of plans for 1 new hotel (singular). Are there more?

edit: I forgot that EDACC was recently naval gazing at including a hotel (assumes they have investment cash and an operator).
