It will be Very Impressive density when built out. Gawd Icons look like hell. The fox towers about 10.0% better. God bless Ultima, Jasper, North and the Healy towers.

Federal Building aims to be Alberta’s newest tourist attraction
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/edmo...t+tourist+attraction/11180684/story.html

Quote:
EDMONTON - The Federal Building may be best known for controversy surrounding its politically charged, $403-million renovation, but Brian Hodgson believes the new visitor centre inside the restored provincial office building will soon become a favourite stop for tourists and locals.

“In terms of facilities in this country, it’s absolutely unique,” said Hodgson, sergeant-at-arms and director of visitor, ceremonial and security services for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

“In my experience in travelling a bit in other Commonwealth countries, I can’t think of any jurisdiction that has what we have.”

Quietly making their debut on Canada Day are three of the Federal Building’s lesser-known features that are open to the public and free for visitors — an upscale Alberta-centric gift shop and gallery, a theatre showing a 4-D telling of provincial history and an interpretive, interactive gallery showcasing how government works.

Also scheduled to open later in the year is a museum-quality exhibit space that opens with a splash in November by hosting one of the copies of the Magna Carta.

“The object of this whole visitor experience is to engage Albertans and perhaps encourage them to get involved in one way or another in the decision-making that’s largely executed by our representatives.”

With a dining room and coffee shop also on the way and 100 water fountains making their official debut on Canada Day in the plaza outside, Hodgson predicts the Federal Building will become Edmonton’s newest public attraction in what was formerly a parking lot and vacant building.

Just got word that Edmonton will be following other cities lead and requiring approved permits before any construction can start.

Larger projects can still get an F & F but one of the most contentious issues, infill housing, will no longer be allowed to excavate and pour foundations before the project is approved

This is a wise move given the issues with infill that have cropped up, and should help provide residents and developers with a little more clarity and direction

Edmonton looks at downtown district energy scheme

By Gordon Kent, Edmonton Journal July 2, 2015 7:12 PM

City staff hope to come up with a business case this fall for creating a downtown district energy program.

They’ve been working with Epcor, Enmax and other companies since 2012 on a scheme to generate electricity centrally and then warm buildings in the area with hot water created by the waste heat.

The plan foresees Enmax owning the generator and selling heat to customers, with Epcor building and maintaining the distribution pipes, a city report says.

The city would spur the development by connecting civic buildings to the system, providing a central location to build the generation plant, and putting up about $9 million in funding.

The project would reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 63,000 tonnes once completed, as well as providing other benefits, the report says...

Looks like the design for Colonel Mustard's has changed a bit since I saw it last year. Still love it and hope they break ground soon!

This is very exciting for me. I look forward to looking at the viability of tying my complex into this system. As a facility with one of the only LPS plants in the downtown area we'd stand to benefit greatly from this proposal

Age catches up to Fort Edmonton: Theme park to close for at least a year

By Alexandra Zabjek, Edmonton Journal July 3, 2015 11:30 PM

EDMONTON - Fort Edmonton Park will be completely shuttered for at least a year when the city starts work on refurbishing its aging utilities.

But the shutdown’s exact length is unclear, which worries the Fort Edmonton Foundation, a volunteer fundraising group.

“Officially, the Fort Edmonton Foundation is not in favour of an overall closure of the park and we’d still like to see an alternative,” said foundation president Lyndon Decore.

“We believe it would be harmful to both the park and the people of Edmonton to have an all-out closure.”

The work is slated to start in 2018 and Decore said he has been told it could take two full years to complete...

You gotta wonder who has the riens at city hall. Seems to me so many projects are being run by the key stone cops!!

Of course this can be done in stages. It's one of our biggest attractions. And they want to simply close it!!! Very odd.
