I would not call downtown filthy, but the city does need to step up its game for garbage collection (especially on the weekends) and power washing (no joke Granville Street should be power washed every week at best, every month at worst).

You would think that a city with such a massive green agenda would be far more concerned about garbage collection.

Also, a city as dark as Vancouver for half the year need more lights / lighting, not less.

I fully support a strong push for low energy use lighting technology to save energy, but not dimming down the city itself. Not to mention less lighting creates more dark spaces for crime at night (hence Translink has been going to opposite direction and train stations are brighter than ever now).

Whut? wow. I've been to Manhattan, and much of it was dirtier than 90% of downtown. What decade are we talking about?

Agree. Plus the smell in NYC on a summer evening...

Many in Vancouver hold themselves to the highest standards..... there is certainly no need to compare with a lesser city like NYC when it comes to cleanliness.

Now I'm itching to post pictures of overflowing garbage/litter at garbage bins, streets and alleyways over the last few weekends in many major downtown spots but understand that this is not the right thread for it. Definitely want the City to send out more crew to clean up city streets rather than focusing on non-issues like LED lighting of buildings, which is my point originally.

I applaud the pioneering spirit of Telus Garden's developers/designers to illuminate the building, and sincerely wish more tall structures do the same.

Tweet the pictures to the city, they'll get somebody on it.

In New York they pile garbage bags on the sidewalks. I never understood that and the smell was like one can imagine. There is no garbage room in their skyscrapers?

Couple of more floors to go. It looks quite boring west side.

I know the viewcones didn't allow for it, but it would be been great to have four sections instead of three making it around 175 meters tall. This side of Downtown would benefit from a landmark tower (which this could have been with the original color scheme). Oh well, it's definitely not the worst new tower and I am in peace with it.

This project has always struck me as a very expensive way to do a basic design, and full of ineffective features. Money wasted on invisible glass fins. Money wasted on creating a cavernous open space under the office tower supported by V columns, only to diminish the space by filling it with that glulam thing. Money wasted on creating pencil-thin ledges out of concrete to support a vertical fin wall at the residential tower (normally just a continuous concrete wall that takes zero engineering)

Those are vertical louvre sunshades. They help reduce the amount of heat that transfers through the windows to warm up the interior.

like I said, the clear glass they used is probably the least effective material to perform that function. Phenolic panels? Wood? Aluminum? Vinyl? Anything solid would be orders of magnitude more effective at blocking heat gain, and would be visible, adding texture, etc.

Here's an angle of the condo tower from my new temporary home looking north up the alley between Seymour and Richards.

Cool perspective, thanks!

Pic by me today - installation of glass on the Robson podium.
It's different than the lighter colouring shown in the rendering (i.e. no lighter spandrel stripe to cover the slab).
Given that the glass abuts the projecting steel frame, I guess the steel frame is at its finished thickness (unless they add width to the inside)(?)

You seem to know so much about construction engineering and seem so passionate about it that I am constantly wondering you working in a bank tower, officesweller.

In other words, I do appreciate all your thoughts and insights on this forum.

I would say six. That top 13 floor section (not counting the transition floor between it and the section below) has seven floors below all the wood forms. If the model in Built Form's pics is still relevant then the top looks to be pretty flat. The completion of the top 13 floor section would bring the tower close to being topped out.

I just noticed the 2 extra tall ceiling heights in that last model pic (subpenthouse and subsubpenthouse)
