More shots of the lighting from this evening. The lights on the underside of the Seymour Street box were going wild tonight. Racing abstract images sort of like the final scenes of 2001 A Space Odyssey, and then a waving Canadian Flag.
Well Thank god it turns off at 11!!! Otherwise how would all those people that face the screen who don't own blinds be able to sleep??! ������
I know right? They even had a gun pointed to their heads to purchase a downtown condo with windows facing a building with light features. Poor, poor folks.
Georgia Street in general screams big city now and that will only be heightened in the future. It really is becoming an impressive strip. The new, unique proposals near Stanley Park, Vancouver's tallest "twin towers" and some of Vancouver's landmark buildings such as the Hotel Vancouver in the middle section, and now at the Southeast end we are getting the Telus Garden complex with its 'big city' feel and lighting features, and soon in that area the new VAG and the proposal for a new building and heritage retention at the Post Office site. From start to finish, Georgia Street will be a showpiece.

Agreed. I also think that along some parts of Georgia, the streetlighting needs to be improved,
both in brightness intensity increase, and in the style of the lamp standards themselves. Parts of it (in that regard) still look utilitarian and uninspired.

Tonights Public Hearing: 520 West Georgia Street - Sign By-law Amendment was approved 8 to 1 in favour by City Council and Mayor
Again the video screen will be used for civic announcements, video art and community programming dusk till 11 (no advertising).
So in the summer it will be on for a grand total of 2 hours. Why even bother?
This city's aversion to light is baffling to me. You should see the length of the reports that staff had to write about this issue; you'd think that Telus was proposing to illuminate every square inch of downtown Vancouver. And what's so horrible about having advertising on the screen?
I have never understood why advertising is offending myself, given that every single sign in the city is already advertising.
I agree that the focus should be community / art related, but every couple minutes or so let Telus at least advertise themselves...
and yeah, the city still doesn't understand how north Vancouver is and how daylight hours vary considerable throughout the year.
How about this:
Darker 6 months of the year: off at 11pm Sunday to Thursday. Fri and Sat off at midnight (a very common time in most cities to turn off light displays)
Brighter 6 month of the year: Fri and Sat off at 1am (hell, you can keep Sun to Thu at 11pm just to be good neighbors).
So in the summer it will be on for a grand total of 2 hours. Why even bother?

That's where your tax dollars go to work: paying these guys to come out with nonsense like viewcones and anti-lighting bylaws, and writing long essays and their own justifications about them. There are other more pressing issues to address like how to constantly keep the city clean and have city streets clear of backed-up traffic, which are clearly not. Garbage in city garbage cans are filled to the brim and not collected, and bad road planning and constructions are jamming up vehicular traffic, etc. Illumination of the Telus Garden should be least of their worries, especially since this building and its features had already been approved during the Building Permit stage.
Perhaps he was speaking in relative terms. Georgia is becoming truly "big city" ... by Vancouver standards.
Now saying it screams "big city" when referring to San Fran, TO, Montreal, Houston, L.A. .... that's another realm altogether.

AMEN. DT Vancouver is downright filthy compared to most of Manhattan, for example. Vancouver's got a twisted view of civic pride.
