^I don't know. I've watched those traffic in China videos. I think the barriers are there because they would drive on the sidewalk if they could.
I don't really like the barriers, but I love the fact you can see what is on both sides of the street. I loved Tokyo when I was there. Roads in Canada are just too wide most of the time for a meaningful pedestrian experience. The other thing about the streetscape is that the shops are small which is the polar opposite to retail in Canada which is fewer larger stores.
