Just lacking size alone precludes it from ever having a national flagship appearance. True, it will never have the spectacle of 50,000+ fans but BMO will compare very well with Commomwealth or surpass it in terms of amenities, luxury boxes, food, covered seating, sightlines, scoreboards, and atmosphere.

I'm using the same basic criterion as that moronic Toronto-sycophant hack writer: appearance to the world watching on television. Under no circumstances does puny little, cobbled-together BMO Field compare to the superior grandeur and symmetry of Commonwealth Stadium. Commonwealth Stadium has an epic aesthetic that the world would expect of a premiere World Cup match. Puny little, gap-riddled, parking lot-surrounded BMO Field does not.

For the sake of Canada's reputation on the world stage, thank God that the opening match was played at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Playing the opening match at Toronto's BMO Field would have been the true national embarrassment.

Guys. Yes commonwealth looks grander than bmo. Though bmo will look better with the canopy. But to say it would be an embarassment to host the opener at bmo is a stretch. Some stadiums in brazil and south africa for the mens world cup were nothing to write home about. Theres a lot more embaressing things than hosting the opener at bmo.

Having said that im happy edmonton was choaen as host for the opener. But i wish toronto / hamilton got some games.

As a side note, loved seeing all those people waving provincial flags (Sask, BC, etc.) along with the Canadian flags, looked great on TV. Really makes me wish Ontario had a more unique flag!

I think the only drawbacks to BMO after the renos are complete will be the outer skin or lack thereof, missing corner seats and cheap substandard seating throughout much of the stadium

Absolutely, there'd be nothing wrong with hosting games at BMO. But to continue the comparison with Brazil and South Africa, the opening match and semi-final (and later) stadiums were all monumental. There is no real pressure on a preliminary-round stadium aside from the opener.

I really Think BMO should get more credit than what is being given here. In all seriousness It's one of the better stadiums in Canada and aside from 1 Grand stand being built out of garbage material whats wrong with the joint? Its got a ton of Amenities its gonna look great next season and It will have an atmosphere that I'm not sure will be rivaled in any other venue in this country. Its not like filling in the corners is an unthinkable project

Commonwealth is a beauty It really is and Edmonton has probably never been so proud to call it their own. But that field needs to be dug down and those seats need to be extended closer to the action. They have got almost 40 years out of the place with minimal investment and its what? half way through its shelf life? maybe? Is a 35M renovation really out of the question? I doubt tax payers would even bat an eye when they get to avoid 200-300M to a new Stadium. The ol girl just needs some modernization to ad to the experience.

If BMO is top tier for Canadian stadia then it shows still how meager are stock of facilities still are. I don't think all who are pumping up BMO field have actually step foot in the place. It is a very underwhelming place, but because of this it does have a lot of charm when its full of drunken goons and they are stomping on the tin grandstands, it for sure has a odd authenticity about it that I hope does not get ruined in this expansion.

When you see the place in person you see quickly that it 'is what it is'. It is very much a no frills venue and is basically a tin shed. The fact half the stadium is made of tin, and the other of concrete isn't very odd, it does not help that the East stands are very much higher the the other side. I know many here don't mind the oddity of lack of symmetry but if your going to do that with the structure, then at least things such as the seats and such line up, even the score board ribbons won't match up, its all very bush league when you start to see it all come together.

Now granted it it is still a construction zone but all the good stuff is going to the suites and higher pay areas. Aside from the roof and so more food options the typical fans are not going to get much of a improvement IMO.

Ive been to bmo, plenty of times including this season. The scoreboard ribbons dont line up at the new colisee. Is it bush league then? Also im noy sure why seats have to line up? Is there a written code that stadiums have to have symmetrical seats? Old trafford, the olimpico in rome, st james park. I guess theyre all bush league too because the seats dont line up.

Probably not. If you even have ribbon boards you cant be bush league. Bush leagues domt have that.

I think some people are too fixated on the billion dollar waste of tax payer dollars south of the border.
