Nothing else comes close to the unique combination of hulking soulsucking fugliness, architectural/ornamentation mishmash, and sheer parkinglotlandus.

The rooms just doesn't make sense. The design is taken from the fishing rooms/stages of rural Newfoundland. The look would make a great facility for a cultural centre, school, college campus or something in a place like Carbonear or CBS, but in St. John's it's just wrong.

BUT - the great thing about the building that gets lost on here is the way it looks from street level. I lived not too far from it when I lived in St. John's during my days at MUN and always thought it was actually a nice looking building from the Bonaventure road side. It kind of looks like a modern reclad/re-imagining of an old church and school complex from that side.

Clocktower of doom is definitely uglier on its own. Contextually The Rooms is out of scale. It's the equivalent of the Duplo building your three year old stacks into your Lego city. Overall though the massing is interesting and the concept has redeeming qualities. The execution not so much, but I can appreciate The Rooms, but Laval's clocktower I cannot. Laval's clocktower wins that round hands down, although both deserve to be on the list.

Haha, but for me the song that most invokes the sort of emotional dread that is evoked by the Laval Clocktower of Doom is Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine". Not because of the lyrics, but rather the sense of doom. Listen to it and stare at the Clocktower.

Welcome to the Machine has the right atmospheric sense of dread for sure. It would be what you'd hear crossing the desolate parking lot to the front door. For Whom the Bell Tolls on the other hand would be what you'd hear as you step into the elevator and it has you in its blackened heart. That or Hell's Bells.
