Too bad we can't edit this thread and create a poll for the top 10 ugliest buildings in Canada. I know my top 3 or so but struggle to narrow it down from there.

Here would be the start of my list:

1) Laval Clocktower of Doom

2) Edmonton's Venetian

3) Cross Iron Mills just outside Calgary in Balzac (Ball Sack)

4) The Rooms in St. John's

5) The pre-Reno Sears on Granville in Vancouver

6) All the student housing in Waterloo

7) Hamilton's DT

8) Calgary DT's west end and more specifically anything by Lacaille

9) Quebec City's Le Phare tower if it ever gets built

10) Any of the tower and office building hybrids like Vancouver and Quebec City have

Forgot to throw in Longueuil's cluster of tower turds by the Metro station. I guess this list could actually become two. One for specific buildings, the other for areas and or clusters of buildings.

I think Laval's clocktower gets wayyyy too much hate. Is it ugly and massive? Yes. Should it be in the top 10? Probably. But in no way is this the ugliest building in Canada. Of course that is my opinion.

Looks like a giant warehouse, it's not visually offensive by itself (unlike, say, an actually ugly building). The problem with it is that it dominates over the gorgeous heritage building stock of that hill, so it stands out, and everyone hates it.

If that exact same building was a huge hangar in a suburban industrial park it wouldn't make any "ugliest buildings" list. Contrast that to the Laval Clocktower, or Waterloo student housing, who would still be at the top of these lists even if they were absolutely in the middle of nowhere.

I still think the Rooms is very gaudy and ugly. Maybe the inside is better but the exterior is awful. The fact that it ruins St. John's skyline just cements its place in the top uglies of Canada list.

Seriously, it looks like two houses fucking an 80's office building.

I'm apparently pretty weird, because I like The Rooms as well. Waterloo student housing, on the other hand, can't see a wrecking ball soon enough.

Perhaps you're right. There are uglier. The mere fact it has been posted on here more than any other structure though gives it #1 status IMO. If you can think of a better nominee for #1 by all means please share it. I can't remember all the uglies we've posted on here over the years and just listed the most memorable ones.

In a weird way I can understand defending the Vancouver Sears for its uniqueness and retro appeal, but you've totally lost me with the Rooms. It'ß like the architect took a massive dump on the city's nicest area. That alone should elevate it on the list I think. Come to think of it I have a hard time coming up with anything nearly as insensitive or ugly plopped onto such a beautiful old part of a city. Maybe that ugly brutalist tower in old Quebec City? At least it blends in a bit better though with its fortress aesthetics.

I'm re-thinking my ranking. The Rooms definitely belongs in the top 3. Not sure about it being number 1 though. The Venetian could put up a good fight though. I can't think of anyone defending that thing.

About a month ago I had a classmate tell me she lived there... Had to resist the massive urge to projectile vomit at the mention of it.
