Downtown Vancouver definitely has some uglies (like the one Klazu posted), but it is spared from having really ugly buildings that really make the surrounding pedestrian experience oppressive.
This may have to do with two things. The first is good timing: Vancouver already had a contemporary planning culture by the early 1970s when most of the truly awful buildings in Canadian downtowns began to be built. Vancouver always had a powerful city planning department that always demanded a design component to large downtown projects and was not afraid to levy fees for amenities. In most cases, you couldn't get away with building a blank concrete wall along the sidewalk of a major downtown street.
The second is accidental: Downtown Vancouver has short city blocks and every city block is interrupted midway by a dedicated alley. This means you can't have a hulking mass of a building, like the Sheraton Centre in Toronto that takes up an entire, large city block and blocks out the sun. It also means that a lot of the utilitarian, automobile functions needed in a city are relegated to the alleyway, out of sight. This includes everything from parking access to garbage pickup. It's really handy, and keeps the streets free of these eyesores.

My last update ever from this view. 2.5 years between these photos (October 2012 vs. May 2015) and you be the judge for this transformation. I think there is no doubt that Nordstrom is overall better, but I think it does fail to deliver in some of the details.

I actually kind of liked that. Yes the blank walls really took away from the street but it was Pure 80's. Had they kept the top and opened up the lower section it could have looked great.

Glad I'm not the only one. Other than the roof garden, the renovation looks pretty generic to me.

It does look like it should out of a science fiction movie. I needed more windows on the ground floor but otherwise was good.
To be fair the renovation is far superior at street level. It's a much better design the way that it interacts with it's surroundings. The old design was way more unique however.

It was awesome for it's absolute terribleness and stark 1984 influence. For anyone at street level or not an architecture geek it was a hideous bunker that belonged in Stalingrad.

Yeah they really should have kept the toilet seat.
