Also worth noting Michael's inventory has never changed as long as I can remember. I can't think of too many businesses that can say that.

Every single one-storey commercial building with a parking lot, or big-box power centre structure in the entire country is worse than this, so relatively speaking, it ain't that ugly.

What I find so bizarre is the brick choice. You have something straight out of the 80's slapped onto what is supposed to be a more edgy, modern design. Baffling.

Edit: That particular brick is very institutional looking for me. It also was quite common on apartments and social housing blocks through out the 70's / 80's I think. Not sure if it's worse than Calgary's brand of Stampitecture orange lego brick or not though.

This trend to mix randomly different materials is killing me. It's so bad that it makes me nostalgic for good old concrete slab.

Is that the building is made worse by its dreary surroundings?

I'm trying to picture it on a leafy, friendlier looking street with other urban buildings. It would blend in I think, and not look half as bad.

Yeah, it's a halfway decent building compared to most. I think the mix of materials is done better than a lot I've seen. I do agree that the brick choice is less than ideal, though. There must have been a clearance on that particular one.

For a truly outstanding example of how not to mix materials in a building, let me introduce to you this monstrosity here in Waterloo. Fortunately, this sort of cheap, ugly construction is less common now.

Unfortunately, Waterloo will be stuck with this and many smaller examples for decades to come. Lester St comes to mind....
