The problem with the AC/Martin design is that is does nothing to the walkway over Pico. It is really just a renovation of the west hall.

And just like that, 5 towers will rise from massive parking lots, with another possible 3 where the tiny 10 story in the foreground is and a pair of towers by Onni right next to the black lined building on the center left. The Entertainment District/South Park will have it's own mini skyline, it'll be awesome

Starwood has under-invested in Downtown LA in general... not sure what their real estate planning department is thinking.

Or perhaps their deal with Bonaventure has some really restrictive clause on competing properties that precludes them from putting a W franchise in Downtown.

If anyone is able to visit the public displays of the proposed convention center designs and take photos (especially of the models), it would be much appreciated. Will give us a better grasp of the scale of each proposal.

At this point, if I was King of Lalaland, I would just splurge a little, tear the entire convention center down and let Zaha Hadid have a go at it and pop down a massive brand spanking new convention center/retail/entertainment complex with a 1000 hotel rooms on top. Once and for all we would blow all of the convention competition out of the water and at the same time create an amazing landmark to lead L.A. into the future.
Just saying.

AC/Martin comes in with a very weak and uninspired design. We don't need TCA-like shitbox CC. Can easily cross them off the short list. Populous and Gensler are both excellent and I personally would be happy to see either. Populous looks like a complete tear-down while Gensler more of a rehab. So exciting!

Populous using new Peterson museum as inspiraton?

^ That's a render. It's still very much under construction.

I was fooled too. I did drive by last week though and have to say they are surprisingly far along.

Funny to compare Peterson's and the Broad. Both design's feature unique, unusual cladding. But when it comes to the actual implementation of the design, it seems like Peterson's is going much more smoothly than Broad's did. I really hope someone writes the full post-mortem of what went wrong at the Broad someday. Curious about where exactly things went wrong.

I'd like to know too. But I do have to say the Broad's facade was much more complex fabrication wise. Apparently the concrete blocks were cast in Germany and there were a lot of issues. In fact I heard that Broad is suing the fabricator as we speak. In addition the Broad's interior is column less also adding to the complexity. I do however think the interior is going to make up for the somewhat lackluster exterior. I can't wait to see it.

Interesting article in the NY Times about the French couture industry's embrace of LA. Perhaps it's one reason for so many French food establishments opening within the past few years?

Quote:
“Everybody wants to be in L.A. right now, it seems like,” said Paola Russo, the French-born founder of Just One Eye, a designer boutique in a still-gentrifying section of Hollywood. As a 25-year veteran of Los Angeles, she easily qualifies as an early adopter, and has seen opinion swerve decisively. As few as 10 years ago, she said, “Every Parisian was more into New York than L.A. There was the syndrome of the filmmaker — the New Yorker who always bad-mouths L. A.?” (She was thinking of Woody Allen, who in “Annie Hall” famously described Los Angeles’s sole cultural advantage as the ability to make a right turn on a red light.)

…

The interest being sparked is not exclusively French. In April, Burberry staged “London to Los Angeles,” a show featuring its fall 2015 men’s and women’s collections, at the Griffith Observatory, with Union Jacks flying and a march of palace guards. Elton John, Mario Testino, David and Victoria Beckham, and their passel of children, sat front row to take it in.

“Los Angeles is an incredible city and is in the center of a creative explosion right now,” Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s chief creative officer and chief executive, wrote in an email. “There is an amazing and inspiring mix of people from the worlds of film, technology, music, architecture, food and culture and now fashion, all doing such interesting things there.”

I took videos. They are on the DTLA Facebook page. Only Populous and Gensler did viable projects.

The guys from Urbanize went down there.

I wouldn't call it the French Couture industry as much as fashion in general. As someone who follows the fashion industry very closely, I've totally seen an upsurge in interest in Los Angeles. Tom Ford showed his AW15 collection in Los Angeles instead of London as he normally does, and Hedi Slimane relocated the entire Saint Laurent atelier to West Hollywood. I attribute this mostly to New York becoming simply too expensive for creative types to live, and they are coming to LA as a result. The industries who appropriate these cultures follow. Hedi Slimane only moved to LA because of the indie rock scene here after all. Hell, most of my musician friends have modeled for him already. I truly believe that right now Los Angeles is better culturally than it has ever been, and is only getting better.

In related news, multiple sources tell me that Rick Owens is going to be opening up a boutique downtown. Perhaps in the May Company Building on Broadway?

If you follow "creatives" in general, look at edgier, artier publications and sites, talk with people in these industries, there is definitely some kind of mind shift happening. Creative industries and people want to be in LA and it's definitely having a moment - you see it in fashion, design, on instagram, in what people want to do, LA's access to dramatic nature for example. People are into LA and the southwest as a whole, and the perceived lifestyle (city life, deserts, mountains, beaches, outdoor adventures). There's also a growing perception among this group that NYC is over. Manhattan is sanitized, Brooklyn pricey and passé, and people are tired of the more extreme winters. I don't want to overstate it, but there's definitely a growing trend towards LA.
