The budget is $40 million - you get what you pay for! Even calling it BRT is (as with the rest in the city) is a misnomer.

Councillors want study into LRT to Mount Royal U, Currie Barracks

Quote:
When council approved the West LRT as a straight shot to the west side, it kept Mount Royal University as Calgary’s only major post-secondary school without train service.

A plot to fix that — some day — is in the works, with councillors set to propose a study on a spur line from Westbrook station that would link the university and the fledgling Currie Barracks neighbourhood.

And a step back...CT not looking at night or late transit for at least 4 years:

It's great to see some new LRT lines being born - but this will probably require the 8th Ave Subway, which doesn't appear to be being built anytime soon/ever.

I'm not sure how a spur from Westgate would require a subway...

While this is good news, I really hope they don't spend too much time and money looking into this right now and stay focused on getting a 203 line in place.

Because when you branch a line, you also divide the headway in half. Right now, there are 25 trains heading west along 7th avenue in the peak hour. Of the 25, 15 are headed to the NW, leaving 10 trains westbound out of downtown in the peak hour, so the West LRT headway is ~6 minutes. If there is a spur, then half the trains are heading to MRU and half to 69th, so they have ~12 minute headways instead, which is not really acceptable at rush hour. But the number of trains clearing 7th can't be increased without a subway.

Jarret Walker has more details.

Maybe it would make more sense to have it as a separate out and back requiring a transfer(though tied in to the system for future use and maintenance).

I assumed the line would be an out and back, thus my questioning of the subway. Now that it's mentioned that a track could be branched off, I see what is meant.

Exactly.

If you have a fully operationally separate spur then all the transferring passengers from the MRU spur (basically all of them) will have to cram onto already loaded trains at Westbrook, along with passengers already waiting at the station. This would be severely detrimental to service quality.

If it does go to Mt. Royal, I wonder how long it would take the Tsu Tsina to push for the extra km to their new development.

Good point, though it wouldn't need to be 1/2 going to MRU, maybe 1/4 but the basics still apply. The key to remember about this study is that it falls after RouteAhead, so hopefully by the time this may come to existing the downtown will be in place.

Depends on the alignment. If its intended to somewhat serve Currie Barracks, it may end up going away from Tsuu Tina (I can imagine going down 37th and then curving back towards MRU and then towards CB)

Except the very logic of building rail to MRU would suggest that there would be sufficient reverse traffic to not be overly detrimental to service. Some people going to MRU/Lincoln Park/Currie Barracks (MLC) will also be coming from the west making space for folks from MLC going downtown and beyond. A far greater influence on the service quality will be determined by the trade off between potential capacity on both lines and time savings from removing the transfer time penalty.

If the Tsuu T'ina wish to pay for the extension to their development, it would be a welcome development for our city, though it seems geometrically challenging to draw an appropriate line that meaningfully services MRU then goes on to the 940 lands.

How about a short line from Chinook to MRU. Kind of like the Shepard subway in Toronto.

Although I also liked the GM of Transportation's idea of a line from U of C to MRU.

A separate line from Westbrook to Chinook and then on to Quarry Park via Currie, MRU and Rockyview is definitely a viable option. A forced transfer at Westbrook wouldn't be too bad, both due to the lower ridership of the west line, and the fact you will have reverse transfers for people going to MRU, Westmount Campus, Rockyview Hospital and even Quarry Park from the west line. This is already what the BRT does (route 306), and I don't think it is unfathomable that ridership would require rail service in the future.

Question is whether the same treatment happens with the SW BRT which would interline with this route between Rockyview and Currie Barracks, but then heads down Crowchild to downtown. Would that also require LRT level of service?

Aren't the adjacent Westbrook lands being sold for TOD developments?
Even if this "secret wall" exists, I'm sure it will be blocked by some future condo parkade.

Welcome to the forum! By the sounds of it, the wall will connect to 37th street facing south and by looking at the map it appears there are no obstacles in the way.

4-car LRT trains

http://www.calgary.ca/PDA/pd/Documents/Publications/Anderson-TOD-project-update-sept-2014.pdf

pg 11 of 12 dated September 2014:
Quote:
Calgary Transit has purchased 60 new CTrain cars, the first of which will arrive in August, 2015. As the new cars continue to arrive, more four-car CTrain service will be introduced.

Calgary Transit will begin some four-car CTrain service in December of 2015.
The January 30, 2015 Transportation Action Plan 2015-18 mentions December as well as retiring 20 LRVs; one supposes the first of the 60 new LRVs arriving in August are for the retirements. It also mentions a budget line request, Project 655-07W: Traction Power Upgrade- 4 Car Trains, of $26mm capital and $7mm operating costs for 2016-24 for traction power upgrades for the four-car trains. The plan is noted as approved.
