ohhhhhh drops the mic!

Like I said I get I was a little abrasive in the 2nd post but nothing bothers me more than the "you cant sit with us" mentality that the RPB's have. The MLS sits really low on Canada's radar in reality. So as a westerner more so a prarie boy looking at a group of soccer fans arguing that MLS is a superior brand to the CFL is somewhat laughable

Someone already posted the link, but didn't you see it on the RPB website that someone posted as a response to your post? And where are you getting the 8,000 from... the article said <10,000.

I think if you collared a Rogers' accountant in a dark alley somewhere, they'd likely admit otherwise.

It's impossible to truly know whether or not the Jays actually make/ lose money. And I think it's safe to say that if they are money-losers, it's because of the broadcast situation. I mean, the owner of the team also has the exclusive broadcast rights to their games. Ummmm how does that work exactly? What do they pay (themselves) for those rights? On the open market, those rights would be substantial and likely result in the club 'making money.'

It's bizarre to say the least, but one must simply ignore those Jays-aren't-making-money comments by Rogers as pure bollocks.

Hamilton’s stadium is “substantially complete”
Matthew Van Dongen Hamilton Spectator May 8/2015

John Rennison/Hamilton Spectator

Hamilton can finally take over its $145 million stadium next week – and now the race is on to get it event-ready.

An independent certifier for Infrastructure Ontario alerted the city Friday evening that the long-delayed construction project has achieved "substantial completion."

That means the city finally gets the keys – 10 months later than expected – and beleaguered contractor Ontario Sports Solutions gets $89 million of withheld payments.

"There will still be minor work needed on the stadium, but it will not impact Pan Am / Parapan Am Games readiness or the stadium's ability to shine on the international stage," said IO vice-president John McKendrick in an e-mail. "Sufficient performance security has been withheld from the total payment to Ontario Sports Solutions to ensure any outstanding work is completed within the project's original budget."

An e-mail to councillors Friday said staff will reviews the terms of the notice from the provincial oversight agency and update council on the next steps.

But time is running out to ready the stadium for a planned public open house May 21 – not to mention an international soccer match planned between the women's teams from Canada and England for May 29.

Public works head Gerry Davis earlier warned council it could take weeks to train staff, test-drive stadium equipment and ready the building for public use.

Youve been on this forum a while dude, I've been asked this question and I've replied to it in verbose detail many times, not interested in repeating myself for the XXth time. Let's just say I don't hate the CFL or the Argos (far from it), but I do have justifiable contempt for most of their fans, guilty as charged...

I think every team has fans that are assholes, but most are passionate and gracious...CFL, MLS, NHL, etc. Don't let a few Argos fans or RPB define the fans, we all understand they are the extremes and very narrow minded.

I am a long time CFL fan and a recent MLS fan with the Whitecaps stepping up to MLS. For me I understand that Argos need to play at BMO to be viable, and while it is not going to be ideal for either team, based on the fact there is no other stadium on the horizon for the Argos, that is the way it has to be.

I am a proud Canadian and want the CFL to survive and prosper. Too much of professional sports is defined by the US, and this is a league that is uniquely Canadian. And I know these guys are playing for the love of the game (or to get to the NFL) but they play with passion. And further to that I want the Whitecaps to do well in MLS, because they are my home town team and it would represent Canada well.

I watch some NFL, but don't find the same passion because I don't have a team. To me I can't just be a New England or whoever fan because they win or I like a player. To me a team being part of your home town is part of what makes me a fan even if I don't get to every game. I don't think as many people feel that way anymore.

I've also had a hard time relating to the NFL I thought I would instantly be a Seahawks fan after the Superbowl win but it just wasn't there. I've never had interest in the MLS but theirs no doubt it's a great product, Maybe if Alberta gets a team I might check it out but untill then I just have nothing to invest into the sport. I have a casual Raps/Jays Interest but its because they have both been ingeniously branded as the nations teams, which always gives me this Canada vs the world feeling.

In the end I'm left a die hard Jets and bombers fan. Winnipeg just has my heart when it comes to sports. I'm an Alberta boy but my teams are both in Manitoba. But I am also a fan of the CFL in general. I have absolutely no problem taking in a Ticats/Riders game ect. Its one of the only league's that has that charm.

"That is the way it has to be"

Says who? The Argos are a business just like TFC or the Jays. both have put in their own resources to help their situation, why are the Argos special to not have too also?

If the Argos are so essential then let the Government bail them out.

Well said.

This forum really doesn't need to get bent out of shape over what goes on at the RPB forum anyway. That group has their strong opinion and it's not going to change, no matter how much logic or reason you may try to infuse into the argument.

Ultimately it doesn't matter anyway. The RPBs and hardcore TFC fans can stamp their feet and threaten to drop their subscriptions all they want, the stadium decision is not theirs to make. Somewhere, someone has decided that moving the Argos to BMO Field is going to happen. It's the correctly sized facility in the correct configuration and it's foolish to think that either TFC or the Argos can or should put up their own stadium elsewhere when this one will satisfy 90-95% of each of their requirements, and at a fraction of the cost.

Since (part or the whole of) the MLSE consortium appears to be on track to alter BMO for CFL football, they do so knowing that they may alienate a percentage of their existing fan base. Since all indications are that they are going to proceed, it looks as though they consider that an acceptable risk.

The fan mentality regarding these things has certainly shifted... we have gone from shared baseball and football facilities, with their very different field shapes, being considered just fine to a situation where now you have soccer fans losing their minds because sharing the stadium with a football team will mean some faint ghost lines on the field.

It reminds me of the 90s when American sports team owners would poison their well by telling everyone how much their cookie-cutter concrete oval stadiums sucked to agitate the fans into demanding something new, paid for by government as these things typically are in the US.

Yes the Argos are a business, and MLSE (sans Rogers) is working with them because it makes good business sense. Nobody's forcing TFC to play in a city owned stadium, they could build one of their own. MLSE certainly has the financial muscle to do just that, but they decided to stay at BMO and share with the Argos. That's a business decision, not some sort of charity.

As for the Jays, they play in a stadium that was largely paid for by the government and that Rogers bought for almost nothing. If any Toronto sports team can be accused of being bailed out by the government, it's the Jays.
