^^^^

Thats also a rare picture that shows commonwealth at 42 000 seats before adding endzone seating and extending the upper level corners.

Yes! finally some meat to this bone! This is, if it comes to fruition the best thing to happen to the long term health to the CFL and the Argos in a long long time! One of the worst long term mistakes the Argos ever made was leaving old Exhibition Stadium on the C.N.E. grounds. Now hopefully with the power of Bell and Bell media's resources behind this team they can get the proper marketing and media presence to keep them relevant in the sporting conversation and create a niche for themselves in the GTA where they are healthy, relevant and strong for the long term!
It feels like one of the last stumbling blocks to a strong league overall. Ottawa is back, the Ticats are on much more solid ground now, there are apparently plenty of interested parties for the Lions. A couple years of stability and growth would do wonders for the next media deal, which could then bring in some new investors interested in pushing an East Coast franchise (and/or Quebec City if the lower Canadian dollar proves to be a challenging problem to overcome with the NHL dream).

Definitely 5+ years down the line... But if this deal is finalized, it could be good news for further stadium construction in other parts of the country.

^ A word of warning... the Argos had big corporate parents before. Labatt and TSN owned the team subsequent to the McNall group... the team came out of that even worse in the end when it came to their prominence in Toronto. I'm not saying the situation will repeat itself with Bell, but the Argos aren't out of the woods just yet.

The difference is that back the the CFL in the whole was on its deathbed. Now the CFL as a league is the strongest its been in a long time with the Argos being the weak spot that needs a little TLC.

Great news but, At the same time you almost need all 3 partners of MLSE to be part of this deal. Rogers wants "fair market value" for dates at BMO? Take a hike! Shame on rogers for trying to stand in the way of the CFL like this to try and protect ticket sales for the precious blue jays. If you had all 3 partners of mlse owning the Argos you would have no cost dates at BMO! 100% profitability and an urgency to market the team correctly and Share the good game days between TFC and the Argos. If you have 2/3rds of the Ownership group involved you are going to see a lot of bickering coming from rogers. Will MLSE's resources be able to focus on the Argos or will the 2 parties have to have different marketing/Managing staff?. Are the Argos gonna get the shaft in terms of game days and be treated as a secondary tenant? Rogers can really screw this up by simple immaturity and greed if they want to. A part of me wonders if the city can step in and take control of the situation as they do own the stadium after all.

It's no secret Rogers has obvious hatred towards the CFL in Toronto (on a business level). They see every paying argos fan as a potential paying jays fan. And they would much rather see 100% of a jays ticket price than 1/3rd of an Argos ticket. If they buy into this deal are they going to intentionally hurt their investment by cheaping out on resources to make sure the Argos don't gain traction and hurt jays ticket sales? cutting off the leg to save the horse kind of thing? (is that how that phrase goes?) Their is a lot of questions here. But If you were to ask me if Rogers would spearhead the demise of the CFL to strengthen the jays revenue streams, My answer would be a very clear yes. With a smile!

Good on bell and tanenbaum for stepping up

At the same time labatt and TSN aren't MLSE. This is a company that has managed to run 3 out of 4 unbelievably profitable franchises that don't have a winning culture. TFC and the leafs could continue to do nothing but disappoint and make money for decades.

they will do wonders with the Argos but Rogers needs to see the potential that the Argos possess rather than the tiny bit of damage it could present to the jays. They need to see them as part of the team. Another TFC if you will

I loved Commonwealth at 42,000. Ironically that would be a perfect size for the Eskis today.

Between the love for Commonwealth evident in this thread and elsewhere, and the solid design for Rogers, I think it's fair to say that Edmonton will soon have the most critically acclaimed set of major sporting venues in Canada.

Now all we need are teams that don't stink

Edmonton will be hard to beat. I wonder how the other cities would rank

Might have to wait longer than that... Releasing plans is one thing, actually building and having completed projects is another. Edmonton will have the crown for a number of years at the very least.

The bar is set pretty damn high... even if Calgary beats Rogers Arena I doubt they'll beat Commonwealth Stadium. To pull that off, you'd be looking at a total project well over $1B. Just don't see it happening.

Tor/Van/Edm are in a league of their own in this category, with Edm the frontrunner. Mtl comes close but sadly the Big O is just a wreck of a venue even if it's beautiful from the outside. Wpg is up there too but MTS Centre is a bit small/barebones and IGF is a bit too small to be included.

Mind you this is all cyclical.

Well, it looks like it will be a project of over 1B, one of the rumours by a local reporter was over 500 mil and he later recanted and upped the ante.

All we have about Calgary is rumour and one is it will be the best arena in the NHL and the other is the stadium's fans will "be comfortable" year round in a smaller capacity stadium than they have now (which says to me better sightlines than Commonwealth).

Commonwealth is well maintained and all but I can't see it matching up to something that could be better than Mosaic 2. All speculation of course and hopefully we will find out soon.

Remember everyone thought IGF was the greatest until Mosaic 2 came along.

I'm thinking Regina will win the football stadium war... Commonwealth is a great stadium, but the distance between the seats and the field lose it points, not to mention it looks half empty due to it's large capacity.

The Chuck will definitely be ahead in the arena department though, once Rogers is built... then it's up to Calgary to top it!

I give my vote to Winnipeg... IGF, MTS & Shaw Park are all great facilities, and Winnipeg is quite smaller than the rest of the cities in the running which makes it that much more of an accomplishment.

Winnipeg's facilities are good but somewhat basic. Only IGF is truly exceptional by league standards... it is a beautiful stadium (and I would by no means take it for granted that new Mosaic is going to exceed it... the only way in which I think it may be better is that it looks very nice from the outside with a sleek exterior, but that's as far as I'd go right now).

MTS Centre is good but it's small and somewhat threadbare (no surprise given that it was an AHL venue for the first seven seasons) even though TNSE is correcting that.

Shaw Park deserves special mention for getting the construction phase under way... it was the first new pro venue built in Winnipeg in over 50 years and without it I doubt MTSC or IGF would have happened for many more years. It's nice and it has a great location, but once you get inside it's basically an average minor league ballpark.

It is pretty amazing that Winnipeg got this done, though... for a while in the late 90s it looked like we'd keep on using the old Winnipeg Arena and Stadium until the wind eventually knocked them down.

Shaw Park is actually one of the better independent league ballparks in NA. Probably the best in the AA although that it will be supplanted by that new ballpark in St. Paul. I think the final tally will be $60 million for a 7000 seat park.
