I think they're also planning on the new hospital rejuvenating the neighbourhood, which I'd be surprised if it failed to do. Lots of cushy government jobs moving to the east side, and I believe some doctors are required to be within a certain commute time from the ER.

SEFC is the new Yaletown! Just imagine once it's all built in 7 years all the professionals that will be wanting, needing to work in the area - good place to invest as the rents and property values will increase.

SEFC is done, this is for the development of the flatlands and NEFC. Eastward ho!

Yes this bodes very well for the area in the medium-long term. In fact I wonder if there will be a bit of a hole left in the current St. Paul's area. Assuming it gets replaced with condos, who will be rushing to move in?

The new hospital campus will have a lot of surrounding services that will mean more white collar jobs. Think of VGH and the surrounding area.

There is also an issue of all the staff who currently take advantage of a wealth of affordable rental accommodation within walking distance. Now all they will be able to choose from is the tired woodframe buildings off Great Northern Way or overpriced OV rentals!

Moving the hospital ~3km east does not require that the staff also need to move 3km east. I'm sure that staff will still be able to live where they do, and walk, cycle, bus or drive to the new location. It's really not that much further...

There's also all the new residential developments along Main St. in Chinatown - those projects will see a boost from this as well.

The new site is off the downtown peninsula, period. In the event of a major earthquake this is a huge liablity for providing medical care to the downtown core and West End.

Note the "At this time based on the information we have...."

That is unfortunately ignored and cut out by a lot of people and media so all they "hear" in their mind is "We have no plans to etc. etc."

Good location. New location is a little bit closer to a Skytrain station that the old location.

Having a more diverse economy in that area is a positive.

VANCOUVER - Premier Christy Clark announced that the redevelopment of St. Paul's Hospital is moving ahead with finalizing the concept plan.

"Finalizing the concept plan is a critical milestone that will lay a strong foundation for a redeveloped hospital that ensures patients and families continue to receive that world-class health care for years to come..."

The new site was the choice of Providence Health Care, which runs the hospital. The government should be praised for letting them make the best long term choice for their institution and the communities it serves.

The first idea is not always the best idea. Get over it.

The new site is a good location and has many condos near it and when the site is done there will be a brand new skytrain station nearby, and close to the intercity bus station. The old site will provide property taxes to the city when residences are built there.

With St.Pauls moving away from Burrard St in ten years, the missing Nelson St station on the Canada Line is unlikely to be built in our lifetimes, since the convenience of a subway stop near the hospital is now moot.

There was no future station space prepared for a Nelson station, so it's impossible now.

If the "brand new skytrain station" you are referring to is the one being built for the Millennium Line UBC Broadway extension, its easily a KM away (unless you're flying over all the railway tracks).

Maybe I should have said "the heavily renovated main street station".

the bus station might come in handy too(for patients that need to come to Vancouver to get an operation or an advanced checkup/scan that isn't available in the interior.
