Red Deer probably isn't Florence but, to be fair, they really did a good job turning their downtown full of 4 lane one way arterials into a streetscape with generous public spaces and landscaping. It's made a world of difference.
Coming from Ontario, originally, I often find that many smaller cities in Central Canada and eastward often take their more attractive, historic downtowns for granted, with almost a total disregard for a decent public realm.
I mean, take a look at
this scene. The commercial buildings are a higher calibre than anything in a similar-sized city in Alberta for sure - but that's only because of the age of the city. Anything built since WW2 has been absolute garbage. The butt ugly diagonal parking and tired old lampposts are reminiscent of what Red Deer had before it did a comprehensive revamp of its downtown core - something I don't think this Ontario town will even try.
