The house certainly has some mid-century modern elements, but even with a traditional roof it doesn't seem like a clear example of Art Moderne or any other particular architectural style (maybe a little international style and bauhaus). If the roof was replaced and redesigned in the 70's it still has spent a decade longer with its current mediterranean elements than its original roof, so it would be strange if Heritage Regina required the original style of roof to be installed as part of any restoration that the owners would have to undertake, at this point in history.

Would be interesting to see any archived photos of this house for comparison...

Hmm... I'm not sure where the MCM is in this property. I see the Art Deco and I see the Mediterranean/Spanish influence, but it's about 10 years removed from the MCM movement.

A little off topic but Regina has some beautiful examples of mid century modern homes. They're not Palm Springs quality or anything like that but still impressive that there were some forward-thinkers in our little prairie town in the 1950s/60s.

Yes, sorry, I was seeing the more square features that I was associating more with MCM than Art Modern (which to me has more streamline elements, like rounded corners, which apart from the one exterior wall is not prominent on this house) and was trying to think of the right term from styles around that period... I don't see art "deco" in this, not enough ornamental features, and MCM is definitely not until a few years after this was built, however it is more likely that the architects of the day were not as concerned about what the name of the particular style they were aiming for was as much as the end result for their client.

So does anyone on here have any information about the history of this residence that would lend itself to being designated a heritage site? Did anyone prominent from its early days live here?

[QUOTE=dsmmace;6985653]They achieved their goal of having these towers 'match' existing/similar buildings, in my opinion this build was very successful. Did you know some of the same people that built the first towers, were a part of these new residences as well?

[B]But you wouldn't understand that Chad or 'brutallydishonest', you feel it's
necessary to 'buck the trend' and create attention/conflict.

How very true , they are wonderful looking , if the complainer has the 150 million for a more pleasing complex they should upfront the monies them selves , some need more cheese and less wine

Watchler residence

I just stumbled upon a bunch of documentation from the RPC (the main document has a lot of information about the history):

http://regina.siretechnologies.com/sirepub2/agdocs.aspx?doctype=agenda&itemid=11795

edit: interestingly the other house on Leopold Cres (street no 77) with mediterranean roof tiles was the first residence that Watchler built in 1929. It may be that the pitched roof with spanish clay tiles is the original style of roof?

Riders CEO sees recruiting edge to new stadium

Craig Reynolds says he was "absolutely blown away" when he wandered through Saskatchewan's most talked-about construction site last week.Reynolds, the Saskatchewan Roughriders new president and CEO, toured the new Mosaic Stadium - which is 27 per cent complete - and says enough work's been done to put his imagination into play. He pictured with his mind how things would look; he envisioned fans, players and amenities.

"We feel quite strongly that this is going to be, for its size, the nicest outdoor, open-air stadium in North America," Reynolds told a Saskatoon audience at Thursday's North Saskatoon Business Association luncheon. "For its size, this is going to be an incredible facility." The Roughriders will play their first game at the stadium in the summer of 2017, but Reynolds said it will be "substantially complete" by the end of August in 2016. That will provide time to host test events, putting the facility through its paces before the primary tenants move in for good.

The Roughriders looked at other stadium projects that provided little time for adjustment and settled quickly on a preference.

"They allowed themselves no time to get settled; no time to test the facility," he said. "We were pretty firm we didn't want that to happen here."

For the millionth time, I'm not Chad. My posts related nothing to his insane rants. Find me one place where Chad had argued for the merits of good institutional architecture?

Also, the original towers were SEPW Architecture and the new ones are Pattison MGM. So, are you trying to be ignorant or were you born that way?

This concern about the heritage value of the house is simply a ploy by Heritage Regina for attention. They've lost out on a number of other things so they're throwing a shitfit on this one.

This house is not worth saving. It's not a cohesive style, it's hardly a style at all. It isn't historically relevant.

Also can we stop attacking BrutallyDishonest? Yeah he's got an attitude problem sometimes in terms of being too curt (learn some manners, man), but he provides a different viewpoint which is needed here as there are already too many drinking the kool-aid at times.

And I second the call for Fourthtower to just use the default text colour.

Wow!! Look at Appendix A7. I've never seen a picture of College & Albert from the 1950's. So much has changed.

I wonder if Heritage Regina has a record of what happened to the house at 11 Leopold Cres? Burnt down?

Dear 'Not Chad'

Staff from PCL built the first residence and were part of the team that built the second residence.

I wonder if the original bidder decided it could not tear it down for parking.

I hope Grasslands Village has those cool streetlights.

from the LP article:
“Nicor Developments Inc. president and RM ratepayer Ross Keith submitted a letter to Sherwood in May 2011 requesting that it not sell the property unless the buyer accepts to designate the property as a heritage building.

“This is an important Heritage Property both for the RM of Sherwood and for the City of Regina,” Keith wrote. “It is listed in the Heritage Holding Bylaw and should not be sold on any basis that does not protect it from demolition.”

Sherwood’s council declined Keith’s idea. Nicor then made an unsuccessful bid on the property, according to RM documents."

At risk of sounding like "not chad" the RM of Sherwood building looks like shit. Do we preserve all old building simply because they are old? Yes, building styles and materials have declined since 1927 but they still built crappy utilitarian buildings back then and the RM of Sherwood building is a classic example. At the very most, any developer should be required to consider preserving the façade if it is cost effective to do so. Hoarding the façade and veneering it onto a new build is done lots in other cities.
Otherwise the RM of Sherwood building is simply an ugly old building with an awkward and relatively unusable size relative to its central location. There are beautiful heritage buildings in Regina - this isn't one of them.

I just heard from someone that the old Canadian Tire building on South Albert is going to be converted into a grocery store from a BC chain. I heard someone here recently talking about a BC chain expanding, but I can't remember the name.

Take that all with a grain of salt though.

I doubt it would be an Overwaitea as they are only located in smaller BC communities now. It would probably be their sister store Save-On Foods which are located in BC and Alberta.
And that's only if this rumour is even true.
