I like that list much better!

And to clarify, by no means was I suggesting that Philly's growth isn't a good thing nor was I suggesting that those cities that are approaching Philly's population are better. In fact, quite the opposite. I think we all know where Philly stands in comparison to Houston, Phoenix, and San Antonio. At least in terms of urbanity, culture, activities, etc.

another list of cities.....

Good Morning, Ladies & Gentlemen: (taken seriously...LOL!)
Below is another E-mail I got, and thought I would throw out there for a heated discussion!
All, I wanna know is, Who makes up these lists anyway?
Philly's rank is #6. Vegas beats out Philly? New York is only #10?
and Detroit is even on the list, seriously??

Have fun! Let the fights begin! We're ready to rumbbbbble.....

This list must be somewhat flawed because San Francisco's city limits is 46 sq miles and has 847,000 + people and the Bay area is has to be one of the densest metros in the country as well.

Yes, if you look at the methodology he basically put a point at the CBD and drew an 8 miles radius circle. That's about 200 square miles. Of course with San Fran that means much of it is in the water. But it's pretty good for a quick and dirty comparison.

I think I am making a comparison mistake . If you look at the land area of any city and then want to imagine all cities
mentioned at the same size , maybe what I am fooled by is , thinking the added area will be as dense as the original
city area . If that were the case , Philly @ 599 s.m. would contain some 6.97 million people .... or Hartford Connecticut
would be home to over 1.47 million .
When I tried to figure out Philly's factitious population , I used Montgomery County as an addition because it is next to
Philly and roughly the same size as Houston ( give or take some miles ) . That fallacy put the estimate at roughly 2.35
million . So , if you converted existing water area into surrounding land area , what would S.F.s population be then ?
What would DC's population be if a surrounding area up to 200 s.ms was incorporated into the cities population ?

The surrounding area of any aforementioned city might be a better barometer , you know , like any cities immediate
metro area out to a total of the 200 mile diagram mentioned .

Definitely up to something. Brandywine is not in the parking garage biz. Plus the Independence Beer Garden and renovated DOW Chemical building is next door.

Well ... !

And these are the guys putting up both 1919 Market and the FMC Tower. I wonder what plans they have in the works for that site?

Hopefully something with scale and design aspirations more comparable to the latter than to the former.

Yeah I understand, but I think the ranking of cities would be much different if you kept other factors in consideration. Miami for example has water and the Everglades close to its city limits, but clearly is one of the denser metros like San Francisco. Obviously I do not know the answer, but I think both of those cities could be ahead of Philadelphia.

The best method would probably be to add up the population in the densest 200 sq miles of contiguous census tracts.

That would eliminate issues with water or oddly shaped metros due to other geographic features.

Important location too. Something good here, in conjunction with the Gallery and East Market, will really help shore up Market Street from 6th through 13th.

Brandwine and Liberty buying up land in Center City?

Sounds like they're anticipating a commercial real estate boom.

Chemours. I keep saying...Well here is one more location that would be good for them to occupy in a brand new skyscraper.
