Wondercon, Comic-Con's little brother, is coming to DTLA next year. Not sure what, if any, implications there are for the future of Comic-Con, but good to see AEG doing their job managing the convention center.

They probably won't put both shows in the same city. Moving WonderCon to LA frees up the market in Anaheim

It just occurred to me...was it common back in the day for department stores to have windows all around?

^ Yes, they were primarily used for displays, but didn't look through to the store itself.

Yeah, I think so. Here's the Wannamaker building in Philadelphia from 1911.

Yes. Interesting observation. It shows how much our expectations have changed over the decades.

a great relief to see scaffolding being installed around that bldg. but also exciting since it has been in increasingly bad shape since the 1980s, when the dept store shut down. But also shocking to be reminded of the increasingly weak condition of such parts of dt through the yrs. In a way the old may co bldg wouldn't have become such a hot mess if it had remained mostly vacant....at least on its main floor....instead of wrecked by swapmeets & things like the horrible brown awnings installed by the previous owner.

it went from this...

Patricksmercy, tumblr.com

or even longer ago, from this...

southonspring.com

to this...

southonspring.com

^ although that's at least somewhat colorful & isn't necessarily any worse than the way it looked from the outside.

chelseafc asks about windows on the main level of large dept stores &, sadly enough, since his or her experience may be limited to LA, he doesn't realize the difference between what happened to the windows of old dept stores in dtla....although I don't believe the may co in dt ever dressed itself up for xmas even during its prime yrs....compared with what still exists with similar areas of dept stores in other cities....

^ I see things like that & become somewhat embarrassed since I feel like celebrating when seeing the old may co bldg now surrounded by scaffolding & being converted from a swapmeet mess into something hopefully way better over the next few yrs. iow, it shouldn't have gotten so crusty in the first place!

Another parking lot going bye-bye at 12th/Broadway. Still unclear precisely what the project will entail, but it will feature more than 50 residential units.

Colin Cowherd did a few of his morning ESPN radio shows from LA earlier this week and made the observation about the ridiculous number of cranes up in DTLA right now. Our current building boom is being noticed by casual outsiders now, not just on Internet forums and occasional newspaper articles.

The projected growth downtown probably necessitates a 2nd urgent care for the community sometime in the very near future.
