Mayor disappointed with grocer’s Good Friday snub 19

Mayor Jim Watson says he’s “disappointed” the green grocer at Lansdowne Park broke the law by opening on Good Friday.

“I was not pleased that Whole Foods decided to just snub their nose at the provincial law,” Watson said Tuesday. “If they want to have a discussion about a tourism designation for Lansdowne, there’s a proper process to follow that through.”

Watson said he would be interested in the public’s opinion if the city was to consider a tourism designation for Lansdowne Park, making it legal for stores to open on statutory holidays.

“Until we get an application we’re not going to proactively go out and start designating areas as tourism areas,” Watson said.

The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, the landlord for retail at Lansdowne, is considering whether or not it will apply for tourism status.

A Whole Foods spokeswoman on the weekend said the grocer thought Lansdowne had a tourism designation. The grocery store was closed on Easter Sunday.

Watson said he’s conflicted over allowing more shopping on stat holidays in Ottawa.

“It is a divisive issue. I have been living across the street from Whole Foods (in respite care recovering from a pelvic fracture) and on that day I was out hobbling along and people were going in and out of it with great numbers,” Watson said. “On the one hand there’s consumer demand that want it, but on the other hand there’s the fairness to the employees and the other businesses that didn’t open and followed the law.”

Capital Coun. David Chernushenko said any discussion about giving Lansdowne tourism status must also include the larger Glebe business area.

My fiancée and I went last weekend (Sunday) to see Furious 7 in the VIP and we had a very positive experience. First, we got our tickets free, with Scene points, so right there we saved $22 a ticket. I would never pay that full price to go see a movie in the VIP. But I will gladly keep using my Scene points for free tickets. You pay the higher price mainly for the cushy seating, which is as comfy as my couch at home, and it reclines electronically (about 4-5 positions). Armrest can be raised if you wanna cuddle with your significant other, which is a nice touch. I forgot to mention that as you go up the escalator to the 3rd floor, there is a slick bar upstairs with a huge flatscreen (Sens game was on) and nice view of Lansdowne, you have no choice but to pass through that bar, and there is a also concession with snacks, popcorn, pop and 6 beers on tap (I didn`t check which ones). Once inside and seated, the servers are quick in coming to see you to get your order with their iPads. But once the previews start, you can`t order from your seat anymore. Best deal for booze at your seat is def a bottle of wine, they are reasonably priced (many bottles under $30), wine list only available upon request though. Beers are about $6-$7, mix drinks $9 for 1oz, $11.50 for 2oz, glass of wine about $7-$10, martini about $10 (dont quote me on the exact pricing). My only negative comment is that there are only 4 indivudual bathrooms on the VIP floor, so this causes lineups after a movie ends.
Overall its a cool concept, but in my case, even though I can easily afford it, I am against paying $100+ for a night out for 2 people to see a movie with a couple small food items & drinks. We spent $26 with tax and tip in total (2 mix drinks each) which we found reasonable. Would have been $70 had we actually paid for our tickets, and to me that is just too much. Screen and sound is same as a regular cinema.

Also, we drove, so we got our tickets stamped for the 3 hour parking. We arrived around 20 minutes before movie start time, and left 10 minutes after it ended (had to wait for bathrooms), movie was 2hrs15min, so we barely made the 3 hour cutoff by like 5 minutes.

Also, Ottawa businesses should work together to push the city of Ottawa to do like Toronto with their decision to ignore the provincial laws regarding statutory holidays. The papers said that Ottawa businesses lose up to $30 million on statutory holidays to businesses in Gatineau which remain open!

Furthermore, why is it that I can get unhealthy fast food 365 days a year, bad quality Tims coffee, or go fill provincial coffers by gambling at the Rideau Carleton Raceway, but I can`t get a few healthy grocery items to cook up at home for a family gathering? Just doesn`t make sense to me. Glad we have Gatineau across the bridge here.

I went to see Cinderella in the regular movie theatre, so alcoholic drinks are not offered. What you are saying is true, the seating is comfortable at the Lansdowne park cinemas. I did not drive, but walked to the cinemas. I did not go to the third floor, but just the second floor. Cinderella was played in Cinema #1. If I go to the VIP cinemas, do I have to drink alcoholic beverages? I do not drink at all. When you order meals from the pub at the movie theatre, does it get delivered to you to the movie theatre or do they have tables and chairs to eat? I am asking that question because I saw in the VIP advertisement, one person was having his salad and drink delivered to him in the movie theatre? How can you possibly eat in the movie theatre, when there is no tables?

You are not obligated to drink alcohol in the VIP cinemas at all. Yes they deliver meals to your seat, but this service stops during the previews, so if you want to order this way, you have to do it prior to the previews beginning. Each seat has a nice table attached to it, so there is ample space for a drink and food.

In fact, I would hazard to say that there is nowhere in Canada where you would be forced to drink an alcoholic beverage.

If OSEG is smart, they will think about offering deals to the businesses impacted by the massive fire on Bank St.

Sad to see the Taco shop burn. Never actually ate there, but it seemed to be doing really well in the brief time that it was open. That is a lot of work down the drain for those owners. It would pretty clearly fit well at Lansdowne if the rent was right.

I believe I read somewhere that 5th Avenue Court was offering them "working space". That is a Minto Property and Minto is associated with OSEG so I image this is all on their radar.

Yikes. They've only been there a month or two, so maybe it's growing pains? It was basically always packed, so someone was liking it.

I heard that there was a big fire in the Mexican restaurant down Bank Street. I probably walked pass there many times, but I do not know exactly where it was located. I never ate there before, even though I lve Mexican food very much. Did an explosion take place at the Mexican restaurant?

Seriously though. too bad for the businesses in that building. Just glad no one was hurt.

I watched that YouTube video many times about the transformation of Lansdowne park. Most of the shops in that video except for Whole Foods and LCBO are not there. The Lansdowne park cinemas are owned by Cineplex because Empire decided to get out of the movie business. Maybe they will put a Taco grande at Lansdowne, but you never know.
