Because we have such a concentrated CBD and a reputation for being a white collar city it's easy to forget that more people work in Calgary's eastern industrial parks than anywhere else. That's only a tiny portion of it too.

That's about 1/2 of the highfield industrial, there is another one just south of it called the Bonnybrook industrial, and together they are about 1/3 the size of the Foothills industrial. Calgary is known as a white collar oil city, but there is a very, very large industrial sector here too, and only a small portion of that is manufacturing. Calgary is ideally situated in western Canada to be the main distribution hub, so this is a big trucking city as well.

The industrial area in the Eastern part of the city (taking up the entire area of the YYC flightpaths) takes up about 1/6 of the urban area. Probably about 1/4 of the NE quadrant and 1/2 of the SE quadrant.

You can see a fair bit of the NE industrial area in the top right of this image...

This shot can be easily taken from the Eastern Islands, except for possible reflection tampering this angle does cover much of the downtown to Yorkville skyline. Also I'm sure this picture must have been taken this winter with the harbour covered in ice as well.

I can't wait. It's all about timing with projects at work. I really need to tie any trip to Calgary in with my next trip back to see my family on the Sunshine coast. I'm doing a late summer trip then my usual December trip. With any luck I'll set up a few days on my way back and check out your amazing city. I can't wait to see the changes first hand. Also I will make the Stampede next year. My GF's mom lives in Calgary and is dieing for us to come visit when it's on.

Good to know. Hopefully Calgary can develop a large manufacturing base as well. Manufacturing is looked down upon by the young generation coming up but it's imperative for any well diversified economy. It creates key know how in the labour market and has a huge multiplier effect. They say that every auto assembly job creates 9 other supporting jobs. No other sector rivals manufacturing in all the benefits it provides.

Expecting an auto assembly plant isn't realistic but other manufacturing must be part of Calgary's long term economic strategy.

I could also see a city like Calgary growing a high tech industry and RD.

Also, I grew up in a mining town and I always wondered why they couldn't make a finished product where the resources were extracted..I.E copper wires,batteries, service water pipes. As a kid, I used to see train loads and train loads of copper concentrate, and Zinc bars shipped out.

Couldn't the same be said about oil in Northern Alberta..There's more to oil then just Petroleum no?

Why couldn't a branch of the Canadian Mint or whoever makes five cent coins for the mint move their operations to saaay Sudbury?

De centralize manufacturing and spread the facilities out to where the required resources are being extracted. I think the Martimes have their canning operations locally, but I'm not entirely sure.

Diversification may offer a cushion during low periods but, is it really a net gain overall in light of Alberta's bread and butter and its struggles with labour shortages?

the auto industry and manufactoring here in general may create a ton of jobs but how many can be considered of quality? It's really quantity vs quality when you considered most of the associated jobs will be menial sales and logistics positions.

A lot of the manufacturing for the oil industry is done in Edmonton I believe. Also a huge amount is done in Ontario, filling the void left by the shrinking auto industry.

“The downturn is where a C-suite’s true mettle will come in — were you just a positive and upmarket CEO and CFO, or were you really able to deliver value when the chips were down,” said Arden Dalik, managing partner at Global Governance Advisors, a Calgary-based compensation advisory firm. “We will see a bit of house-cleaning.”

I saw those two TO pics on my phone and was impressed. (In this thread, I mean, not being a hipster saying I saw them first, lol). Just came to this thread on Desktop and gasped again. Wow. Impressive two photos - even without the photoshop. The winter one is cool too.

Just a few examples of local manufactures I know of:

1) Smart Technologies - they do smart boards and displays for education etc.

2) DIRTT (Doing It Right This Time) - manufacture of movable walls, furniture etc. Also the founder Mogans Smed started SMED a massive manufacturer of the same type of products that was sold to Haworth, an American company who recently closed down the enormous facility in the city's Foothills Industrial Park to move fabrication to the US. The building is now being subdivided into various offices.

3)ISYS (unfortunate name I know) - Manufacturer of advanced label printers sold the world over.

Obviously much of the other manufacturing and fabrication that is done here is O&G related. It's insane how much spin off stuff there is that people don't see outside DT.
