When Centre house opens, East house will be closed and West House will still be under construction leaving Centre house with 3 elevators as the sole way to get up to platform (along with the stairs in centre house).

Wow, much ado about nothing. I read somewhere that the existing passerelle will be removed summer next year. It's a safe bet that the 'spring' start on the existing stationhouse will have them block off the stairs (between Central and Beresford) into the ticket area so they can start the necessary ground work - they'll have to extend the stationhouse to fit those escalators in. The whole stationhouse will close in the summer when the passerelle is removed and the new stationhouse is open.

Yeah, they haven't started construction at New Westminster yet. The escalator down to the bus loop is back in service.

They will have stairs to get to the platform well the construction is going on.

I was there today and they *still* haven't started construction - a month after they supposed to.

I don't understand why construction hasn't started at Commercial-Broadway. There is no way it's going to be ready for the opening of the Evergreen Line.

Were the station improvements pitched as part of Evergreen? I thought they were part of the upgrade package of Metrotown/New West/Main Street etc.

The Commercial-Broadway upgrades are considered part of the Evergreen Line because it's intended to increase transfer capacity.

I think its a separate bid. The P3 building the EG line are not responsible for Commercial upgrades.

So it may be a requirement to upgrade for EG, its not part of that bid.

I think.

The following is all from an email I just received from TransLink regarding the New Westminster Station upgrades as a part of their Community Updates:

Upgrades to New Westminster Station are about to begin as the contractor prepares for the start of construction. Once complete, the upgrades will improve accessibility, capacity, safety and security at the station.

Project benefits:

- Replacement elevator and escalators to improve access for customers.
- Improved lighting and signage throughout the station.
- Glass panels that replace the existing mesh screens to improve station visibility from street level.
- Better integration with the surrounding community to make it easier to connect to and from the SkyTrain system.

Project status

The contractor expects to begin setting up on site in May. During the first few weeks, equipment will be brought in and the area will be prepped for construction.

Once setup work is complete, construction begins and is expected to continue until summer 2016.

What to expect

Our top priority is the safety of the public, passengers, employees, and contractors. Due to the nature of construction activity, we recognize there will be impacts to the public, including noise and changes to station access.

Below is a summary of the key project phases and expected impacts. For ongoing information about construction impacts associated with the project, visit www.translink.ca/newwestminster. Please note that timelines are subject to change based on construction activity.

Phase 1: East and West station access – spring 2015-summer 2015

Construction crews will focus on replacing the east escalator and upgrading the stairs, at the Eighth Street entrance, and the west escalator and stairs by the bus loop.

Painting and the installation of new window glazing will also begin at platform level, and the emergency exits at the north and south sides of the platform will be painted.

Impacts:

- Station access from Eighth Street will be closed. Passengers will be redirected to the Carnarvon Street entrance.
- The escalator and stairs from the bus loop to the concourse level will be closed. Passengers will be redirected along McNeely Street to the Carnarvon Street entrance, or through the parkade to the existing moving walkway that provides access up to the concourse level.
- Platform widths will be reduced in some areas to allow for painting, window installation, ceiling replacement and new lighting.
- Hoarding in the concourse area to allow for new ceilings, lighting and painting.
- Noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating, is expected to begin in several weeks. Notifications will be sent in advance of particularly noisy work.

Phase 2: Eastbound and westbound platform access – summer 2015-fall 2015

Construction crews will focus on replacing the escalators and upgrading stairs to the eastbound and westbound SkyTrain platforms from the concourse level. Replacement of the south elevator, which provides access to the eastbound platform, will also begin.

Painting and installation of new window glazing at the platform level is expected to be completed in this phase.

Impacts:

- Passengers traveling eastbound and westbound can access the platforms via the Plaza 88 escalators and stairs.
- Passengers requiring the use of an elevator to access the eastbound platform can use the Plaza 88 elevator, by the cinema from the parkade west of the bus loop at street level, or by the cinema at the concourse level.
- The north elevator to the westbound platform will be in service.
- Hoarding in the concourse area to allow for new ceilings, lighting and painting.
- Neighbours can expect noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating. Notifications will be sent in advance of particularly noisy work.

Phase 3: Concourse area upgrades – fall 2015-summer 2016

Construction crews will complete the replacement of the south elevator and begin upgrades to the concourse area.

Impacts:

- Hoarding in the concourse area to allow for new ceilings, lighting and painting.
- Neighbours can expect noise associated with large construction projects, including nighttime work with varying levels of noise while trains are not operating. Notifications will be sent in advance of particularly noisy work.

I wish these upgrades included "down" escalators. Would really help people who have trouble with stairs and there isn't an elevator on the eight street entrance.

They've finally started work at New West Station - both of the street to ticket levels escalators were blocked off. Why did they have to block off the stairs too?

It was a great afternoon to hang out at Pier Park. The plantings have filled in so the traffic noise isn't as bad.

Now here's is something that baffled me.
Sorry for no pics but I will try to get those up tomorrow.

Anyways at the corner of Powell and Victoria I found a shopping cart overfilled with the old brackets for the power rail. I contacted translink regarding this and they didn't seem to really care but the question still stands: how did they end up there, and what this mean about the thousands of others we've already apparently replaced?
Last I looked the cart was still there this morning.

Depends if it was intentionally left there. I'd suspect metal thieves.
