The Beltine is fast becoming Calgary´s Weste End.

It doesn´t look as big from most skyline views because of the huge dominance of large and tall office towers downtown. Vancouver´s residential areas look huge because they asre not short buildings in comparison to the downtown office buildings.

Exactly. Downtown and the Beltline cover a similar area to the peninsula in Vancouver, but the office towers here dominate so much that the beltline looks small.

Historically about half of those people were probable working in the factory producing the soot and the other half only had jobs because of the concentration of factory workings looking to spend money.

At least it keeps the bugs away.

The key word was 'becoming' The Beltline is looking great, but it's still a work in progress. In all fairness, There really aren't many parking lots left in the Beltline they are mostly in and around the Stampede grounds.

Green, tree covered streets aren't lush enough for you? there are lots of parking lots in the area around the Stampede grounds but they are disappearing fast.

I cannot tell where Beltline ends, but in the photo that started the whole discussion there are lots of parking lots in the foreground. I realize that is some kind of event area, but I can see Guardian towers in the middle of that area, so I though that would still be Beltline.

Granted, the area further back looks much more greener and bears a resemblance to West End.

The Beltline goes back about 15 blocks in that picture, the area in the foreground is the Stampede grounds and east Victoria Park (one of 2 neighbourhoods that were combined to create the beltline) and is an ocean of surface lots. West Victoria Park and Connaught (the other neighbourhood) are very green and mostly built out. If you want a good example of how green the Beltline is, check out google streetview for 13-16 Ave, anywhere west of 2St SW, very similar built form to the West End, though obviously not as lush due to being on the high praries, not a valley at sea level.

I've always found the Beltline similar to the Broadway Corridor in Vancouver. Both have a mixture of office and residential, are separated from downtown by a physical barrier (False Creek for Vancouver, the railway tracks for Calgary) and probably have a comparable population.

Broadway always reminded me of Mission here a bit more, still very urban, just more low rise. Vancouver's density outside the peninsula always impressed me.
