Wait. I understand they recently did a renovation of the Luxe, but these new Chinese owners now own the entire building. Couldn't they demo it asap but keep Luxe as the tenant of the future 250 room hotel within the 5 years and still be in this 5 year contract? If not and we are stuck with the Luxe for another 4 years then that really sucks. At least we will see a few new cranes around the time Fig Central is done..

Regardless, it seems like we will probably be getting two separate towers that will most definitely compliment the LED signage that 1200 fig and Fig Central are bringing to the corridor. Possibly three. Hell he could fit four skyscrapers in there if he lays them out properly. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Me too. I'm just really uncertain about the BLOC's timeline though. Seems like things there are really moving at a snails pace. Every time I walk by I poke my head in but really don't see much substantial change. It seems like they are still in some stages of demolition. At least if they would tear off that hideous glass canopy, I might feel like some progress is being made. At the rate they are going seems like 2016 is most likely.

They have a tweet from earlier this week:
We can't wait to introduce you to the realized vision of The Bloc later this year. @McCartanDesign @studioneleven
Not sure what that means exactly, but it's something...

The Roof of the Bloc is supposed to come off in the next 2-3 weeks. We can start breathing easy then.

According to the developer, a soft opening is planned for Q4 of 2015 and the official opening in early 2016.

You've got to know they will do all they can to be open for the critical XMAS holiday. Ratkovich usually knows what he is doing........I bet he gets it done.....not completely but mostly....by XMAS.

I believe their plan was to develop the two parking lots on either side of the Luxe first and then later on redo the current hotel site.

Nice photos.

JRD, since groundbreaking and exevacation has already begun, you should move Fig Central, Glass Tower, and 801 Olive to Under Construction(with 801 saying old rendering)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that puts the number of 10+ floor buildings UC in LA County at 20, yes?

Wilshire Grand - 73 floors
The Current Long Beach - 17 floors
888 S. Olive - 33 floors
888 S. Hope - 33 floors
Columbia Square - 20 foors
Federal Courthouse - 10 floors
Metropolis (4 towers) - 19/38/40/58 floors
10000 Santa Monica Blvd - 40 floors
Broadway Palace - 10 floors
Waldorf-Astoria BH - 12 floors
Sunset La Cienega (two towers) - 10/10 floors
Fig Central (three towers) - 49/40/40 floors
801 S. Olive - 33 floors
Glass Tower - 24 stories

Not bad.

SoHo House plans on opening its second LA location in the Arts District… south of 7th Street. *gasp*

Unfortunate. Checked out their Berlin location a few weeks ago - it is equally jarring and out of place there (a largely youth-centered, bohemian city big on the arts/culture and known for its strong oppositon to capitalism and consumerism) as it would be in the AD. We have enough of the NYC/transplant/"global traveler" douchebag scene in LA as is.

Transplants, traveler, douchebags? Says the guy who's in Berlin and lives in Oslo.

Living and attending university in a city, and going on a weekend trip to a place I lived and worked, is entirely different than people from NYC moving to LA and whining/gloating about everything and constantly comparing (often negatively, despite still living there, lol) it to NYC. That is a very specific criticism, and I am sure many LA people - especially natives, such as myself - would agree with me.

things like this are another reason why I sort of shake my head when ppl become so angst ridden about new projs in dtla not being taller, or not being architecturally good enough, or having too much parking, or lacking stores on the ground level. It's not that such aspects of the hood, or its new devlpt, aren't important, but that things do need to be placed in their full, proper context, & that they need to be prioritized.

so is the new spring st pk already showing signs of succumbing to what has long ailed pershing sq due to a design that isn't good or friendly enough?

okay.

when ppl holler 'that proposed bldg for dtla is too short!!'....or 'that new proj's design looks like something in samo or irvine!'....or 'that devlpr should be cited for including too much parking but no shops on the 1st floor!!!', or 'that proj will take up too much land!'....I think of an owner of something like this becoming upset cuz he doesn't have a fine stereo system to enjoy when driving around town.

Kettle = black.

Seems like you packed your LA pompoms on your trips abroad.

And if you think this Soho club thing won't be filled with local native LA douchebags, I have a bridge to sell you.

So because a park can't get security that means we shouldn't demand higher quality architecture or more density? Whatever. None of these things are mutually exclusive. It seems in your world 2 + blue = table.
