People need to give up the notion of US teams in the CFL. IT was a disaster last time and no amount of "careful considered expansion" will change that. Having American teams also tips the balance of competition in their favour. US labour laws will not allow for the protection of starting jobs for nationals. And the answer does not lie with eliminating the ratio - that would effectively kill CIS football. At the point you might as well shrink the field to 100 yards and play 4-down football.

I don't think I completely agree(although you have valid points). For instance I would much rather play in Montreal than Spokane, Edmonton than OKC. Obviously if you put the team in LA or Chicago you will see that for sure.

^ I enjoyed the CFL US expansion era... it really did shake things up and make them interesting. But unfortunately it was built on unreasonable expectations. I thought the fan support (Las Vegas excepted) was pretty decent considering that the Americans didn't know a thing about Canadian football, but it's like they expected 40,000 fans a game overnight. Even the NFL spent decades as a rinky-dink league that took a backseat to college football until it really took off in the late 60s and 70s.

But that said, it would be folly to repeat those mistakes. Keep the CFL Canadian.

I am not against a new expansion in the US but with the condition they choose their new markets carefully. Anchorage, Spokane, Billings and Bangor are isolated from NFL markets and all in States contiguous to Canada. I think there would be a demand there (maybe a modest demand, but still a demand). For the same reason the QJMHL experience worked out pretty well in Lewiston, ME (the team relocated after a few years but it was not because of the lack of interest)

The difference between hockey and football is that EVERYWHERE in the US has a local football team that people passionately get behind. Canadians aren't as aware of NCAA football, especially at the lower levels, but the reality is that every two-bit town has at least a NCAA DII football team that has been around for 80 years that everyone supports. There are no virgin markets for football in the US. No matter where the CFL went, there would be stiff local competition.

Well no. It can go both ways. Maybe youth numbers for the CFL are tempered due to the surveys methods? That is a valid question you could ask.

I just don't hold weight on this survey in general, it gives a good talking point but 1500 old people on a telephone survey isn't going to tell you much.

These incremental moves the CFL makes are not enough to keep up with the emergence of other leagues in this country. Slowly but surely the league is fading away. The CFL has to be more aggressive to survive, and if that means having teams in a few select US cities, so be it.

How is it fading away? a NEW team was added last year, the league is actively looking for a 10th team

Revenues are up, almost EVERY team will have a new or refurbished stadium, the new TV contract is up SIGNIFICANTLY and gives every team more money. If you are not a CFL fan, fine that is your right, but don't keep throwing out these asinine comments, that are not true

BTW I have Lions seasons tickets, both my sons go with me, and there are a TON of fans under 54 years of age. The good news is CFL fans stay fans for life. I agree that the CFL needs to do a better job of marketing to younger fans and I believe the new Commish was hired with this in mind.

Has anyone else followed the CFL teams and leagues on twitter and other social media.....they get it and are hilarious ( on par with the LA Kings and others) and they are getting younger followers who in turn are going to games

The league needs to take advantage of cities with venues that have larger seats that seldom fill up completely (Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver) and use the space to get kids in the door.

Case in point: my dad isn't a football fan and I was completely football ignorant until my buddies and I got free endzone tickets to some Bomber games when I was in junior high. From that point on I was addicted and I have spent thousands of dollars on tickets, merch and other football 🞵🞵🞵🞵 over the years.

Without the freebies to get the ball rolling, I doubt any of that would have happened.

Add kids (under 10) for a $1 or something like that. Pads the attendance stats, gets kids interested and the they will spend money at the concessions, on jerseys etc. so there is money to be made on that

I remember Edmonton used to do a Back to School campaign after the Labour Day game. They always had 50K plus a the games
