Toronto certainly had huge Waterfront areas that were unpopulated but that was due to both the Great Toronto Fire and the Waterfront was mostly created by land reclamation but again neither of those things apply to Edmonton. Where did all the huge expansive lots come from? Were they always there or were they once urban and were torn down?
Boom-bust oil cycle. Many lots were bought for redevelopment, and the existing original 3-4-5 story brick buildings were torn down. Then oil goes bust and they're not so bullish, turn the lot into surface parking.

Repeat 4 or 5 times since WWII.

Even though that particular pic is really lacking in the "skyline" department.

Three extremely separate 1970s highrises and that's it. (If you really want to nitpick, add the Concorde's round top and St. John's Church spire, and you have everything that sticks out.)

Looks like it's going to be a pretty warm weekend for this event, pretty cool to see it in E-town though.

I think this deserves to be posted also in this thread.

Here we go! The tallest building in Burnaby. Notice that there is no monkey business with the floor numbering in Sovereign. Even floor 13 is there and only 4 is missing. Interesting how the condo elevators can stop at the hotel floors. They have a different lobby, but I am not sure if they use the same elevators.

The suite was facing southeast, but Burnaby Mountain was visible from the balcony. Mount Baker could not be seen in this hazy weather.

Deer and Burnaby lakes. Lougheed town center in the distance.

Next is Station Square complex. Imagine five towers going up here!

Metropolis, the largest shopping center in all B.C.

Burnaby's second tallest tower is Metroplace. Silver next to it.

Woops, Crystal Mall looks small from over 130 meters above.

Modello will be going up in this view. Central Park in the background and hazy Richmond in the distance.

Check out the size of these balconies! This is the standard size in Sovereign with some units having double the size! There are smaller suites than these balconies!!

Metrotown panorama. Tower by tower Metrotown is starting to look like a city.

That's Chinese monkey business. The number 4 sounds like the word for "death," so it's avoided. Subsequent numbers containing the digit "4," like "24," are okay, but they can't all be "4." You won't have a 44th floor or a flight 444, for instance.

The Chinese are incredibly superstitious. Ridiculously so. I would have thought that most people in Vancouver knew this. You won't see a condo building catering to Chinese with a 4th floor. If there is one, you won't have Chinese people living on it. And the condos on the actual 4th floor, marked as the "5th floor," will be cheaper because no one will want to live in them.

Because they're not stupid. They know it's really the 4th floor, i.e. the "floor of death."

Pro tip: Never give white flowers to a Chinese person in a hospital or at a wedding (or for any other reason), because white is the colour of death. White wedding dresses have become somewhat fashionable due to the Western influence, but red is still the traditional, auspicious colour for celebrations.

Another pro tip: Never give a watch or a clock to a Chinese person, because the word for "clock" sounds like the word for "end," making it a bad omen, i.e. you could be responsible for bringing that person's life to an end.

Everyone knows that about floor numbering, but thanks for re-iterating the obvious. But since the lack of fours and thirteen is so prevalent in Vancouver buildings, that was the whole point of my comment on how refreshing it is for once to see most of them on the elevator pad.

Anyways, there are also buildings in Vancouver that skip all the 40-something floor numbers, going from 39 to 50. I have yet to see one in real life, but some buildings do exist. Now that is stupid.

Makes me wonder if it wouldn't have just been easier to not allow anything benign to have a name similar to anything considered negative.

Unbelievable views from the Sovereign, Klazu. The huge balconies are a major plus as well.

At least they have a reason for disliking 4. As opposed to disliking 13 because. . . um . . . it's 13?

Stanley Park was a big "meh" to me (as a tourist who was there for a short time). Saw it, and immediately told my sis that we should move on. I'm downtown and I'm an architecture/heritage fan, I want to see buildings, not trees. We spent maybe a few minutes there and that was it.

That was five years ago as well, and my sis was the 'local' so she was the one in charge of the directions while we were there. If you let me loose in Van now without a map I'm far from sure I'd recall enough to find my way. I didn't pay much attention then as I knew my stay over there would be temporary.

If you want to doubt my word go ahead, but I see no reason to lie about these things on this forum. Dig up my old posts if you want, everything's coherent, and everything's true. Now you can go back to your local SSP Vancouver section... thanks and bye.
Thank you for your reply Leo. I appreciate your honesty, like Montreal which is a large city. You really admit to not understanding the geography of Vancouver. Which on a skyline thread is not easy to understand on a map. I have no need to doubt your words about your time in British Columbia. It is a very large province. It would be very difficult to get a proper understanding of the geography, probably just made you more confused. Also, being about five years ago perhaps your memory is not as up to date as what would be proper to judge. The area, within, the context of proper understanding in two and a half weeks. It would be very easy to get lost without the help of your sister.

After all this is a thread that is kind of dedicated to the skylines.

No worries I have a great thread from a street view photographed by a Montreal resident.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=139296

This has some interesting photos probably more street focused then skyline. Anyways, I am glad to be of some help as well as informative. Hope you get a chance to come and visit Vancouver again. I will be sure to take you out for a beer.
