The article on the megamall is interesting. I see they start by trumpeting all the jobs that will be created but don't mention until the end that the vast majority of them will be low-paying. I guess low-paying jobs are better than no jobs, as long as they include adequate transit. Won't hold my breath tho, Miami area doesn't seem to have much money for expanding transit at the present.

Does Florida really need another mall and theme park? I guess it's still growing fast so maybe so...

Most jobs in the Miami area are low-paying service industry jobs, so this is nothing new. It's been a crap economy for a long time and this crap only adds more of the same.

Florida doesn't need another mall of theme park... but it's never been an issue of need. Tourism is the undisputed driver of the economy there still, and will be for as long as we are around.

^^^

Good for the economy. Even if the jobs aren't white collar, something like this will still generate nice tax dollars for the region, increase tourism numbers, and that benefits many who are in the tourism industry.

Renzo Piano's Plan for Biltmore Terrace Got Approved

Quote:
The Renzo Piano-designed plan to replace the historic Biltmore Terrace was approved at yesterday's Design Review Board, reports the Real Deal Miami (Which has a few facts wrong. From what we can recognize, the MDPL officer's name is Daniel Ciraldo, not Michael, and that's the wrong rendering bub). Everything else we already knew. See Curbed Miami archives to get up to speed, but basically it's a Terra Group project, the very contempo condo tower has replaced an historic Morris Lapidus-designed hotel, and Terra Group originally got a height variance from 60 to 200 feet with the promise that they would make the new structure a hotel (and preserve the old one) and welp, neither of those things happened.

These set of renderings don't look as garish. Still seems like another pie in the sky proposal with little chance of happening (we get a lot of those down here). Not sure they really thought through taking a mall/amusement park they originally designed for New Jersey and just copying and pasting it here. Not as much demand for an indoor beach and tourists don't come here to ski:

I would tend to agree with you on Pie in the Sky but these cats do have some background on pulling this off. However, let's see if they get the Meadowlands' American Dream done first.

James Corner Field Ops Picked to Masterplan the Underline

Quote:
Out of 19 submissions and five finalists, James Corner Field Operations, the landscape architecture firm that designed the High Line in New York, was picked to master plan The Underline, the planned linear park underneath the Metrorail. James Corner Field Ops is also doing the Lincoln Road District Master Plan, and worked on the PAMM and the Frost, so yes they're quite busy down here. At the Underline, they will "develop the vision and master plan" as well as "provide more detailed designs for two demonstration projects that will include the Brickell area and an additional site to be determined."

Good news and we need more highrises like this in downtown & Brickell with No parking spaces. The area has enough mass transit with Metrorail & Metromover that living without a car is attainable.

Yes, the less cars in the area, the better.

Why would they build such a huge resort by the highway in downtown? Shouldn't this kind of thing be in south beach?

Crews Demolish 92-Year-Old Building At 2500 Biscayne To Make Way For Apartment Building

What will go here:

Quote:
A 92-year-old building on Biscayne Boulevard has been partially demolished to make way for a rental building.

The demolished building was built in two phases. A 1923 building known as the Wolpert Apartments had a historic designation removed after the property owners appealed. A 1927 commercial building fronting Biscayne Boulevard retains a historic designation.

New York Developer Greystone received approval last Fall to build a 20-story apartment building that integrates a portion of the historic building. The project will include 156 luxury rental units.

Behar Font & Partners of Coral Gables is the architect.

Seminole Tribe argues for compact, confirms new hotel in Hollywood

Quote:
The Seminole Tribe of Florida is lobbying to maintain its gambling agreement with the state — taking out TV ads, enlisting support of the Florida Chamber of Commerce and even revealing more details about a second hotel in Hollywood.

he tribe's five-year agreement to pay $1 billion to the state for exclusive rights to blackjack and other table games across the state and slot exclusivity outside of South Florida expires July 21. Meanwhile, House Republican leader Dana Young, R-Tampa, filed a bill that would bring up to two resort-hotel casinos to South Florida and slots to Palm Beach County. The bill doesn't mention the Seminoles.

The tribe began airing an ad on Tallahassee stations on March 2 that says the tribe has provided for "controlled, profitable and safe" gambling in Florida.

On Sunday, another ad, featuring Florida Chamber of Commerce CEO Mark Wilson and Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association President Carol Dover, urges the state to extend the five-year portion of the agreement, called a compact, that addresses table games. The Seminoles have a larger compact with the state that runs 20 years.

"Florida is changing, which is why we need to extend the compact and limit gambling," Wilson says in the ad. "Changing it could lead to the expansion of gambling, which simply is unacceptable for a state that has worked hard to grow its economy and develop a family-friendly image."

Wilson spoke against hotel-resort casinos in a debate in Orlando last month: "The compact was originally designed as a way to limit the expansion of gambling."

A Seminole news release notes that extending the blackjack portion saves more than 3,000 jobs and creates more than 15,000.

Dover adds: "We cannot afford to lose these vital dollars."

Meanwhile, Seminole spokesman Gary Bitner confirmed Wednesday that if the compact is renewed, the Seminoles will add a 1,000-room, guitar-shaped second hotel to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood and another hotel at their Tampa casino. The tribe in the past year has leveled such restaurants as Johnny Rockets, Tatu, Renegade barbecue and the Blue Pointe at its Seminole Paradise Hollywood property, but noted that it was waiting on approval from the Seminoles' tribal council before making an announcement. And that approval has been awaiting an updated compact.

MIAMI | 27 SW South River Drive | FT | 12 FLOORS

Project: 27 SW South River Drive

Quote:
The owner of a 14,969 square foot property at 27 SW South River Drive on the Miami River wants to build a 12-story residential building.

Representatives of South River Warehouse LLC, controlled by Arturo Ortega, presented plans for the project at a Miami River Commission subcommittee meeting last week. It isn’t clear if the proposal includes an adjacent 11,876 square foot property owned by Manny Seafood Corp.

Ortega bought the property last year for $1.6 million. A structure on the site dates back to 1925. It sits across the river from Melo Group’s Flagler On The River, while Neo Lofts is across the street.

Ortega will be required to build a riverwalk, and is hoping to cut a deal to convert a vacant 4,500 square foot city-owned lot next door into a park. Plans prepared by Arquitectonica show the park, tentatively called Flagler Cove Park.

The item will return to the next Miami River Commission’s Urban Infill & Greenways Subcommittee meeting after being deferred last week.

^ That'll be a huge victory for developers if they can get Ryan Gosling to walk along the riverfront like that.
