Seminole Tribe argues for compact, confirms new hotel in Hollywood
Quote:
The Seminole Tribe of Florida is lobbying to maintain its gambling agreement with the state — taking out TV ads, enlisting support of the Florida Chamber of Commerce and even revealing more details about a second hotel in Hollywood.
he tribe's five-year agreement to pay $1 billion to the state for exclusive rights to blackjack and other table games across the state and slot exclusivity outside of South Florida expires July 21. Meanwhile, House Republican leader Dana Young, R-Tampa, filed a bill that would bring up to two resort-hotel casinos to South Florida and slots to Palm Beach County. The bill doesn't mention the Seminoles.
The tribe began airing an ad on Tallahassee stations on March 2 that says the tribe has provided for "controlled, profitable and safe" gambling in Florida.

On Sunday, another ad, featuring Florida Chamber of Commerce CEO Mark Wilson and Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association President Carol Dover, urges the state to extend the five-year portion of the agreement, called a compact, that addresses table games. The Seminoles have a larger compact with the state that runs 20 years.
"Florida is changing, which is why we need to extend the compact and limit gambling," Wilson says in the ad. "Changing it could lead to the expansion of gambling, which simply is unacceptable for a state that has worked hard to grow its economy and develop a family-friendly image."
Wilson spoke against hotel-resort casinos in a debate in Orlando last month: "The compact was originally designed as a way to limit the expansion of gambling."
A Seminole news release notes that extending the blackjack portion saves more than 3,000 jobs and creates more than 15,000.
Dover adds: "We cannot afford to lose these vital dollars."
Meanwhile, Seminole spokesman Gary Bitner confirmed Wednesday that if the compact is renewed, the Seminoles will add a 1,000-room, guitar-shaped second hotel to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood and another hotel at their Tampa casino. The tribe in the past year has leveled such restaurants as Johnny Rockets, Tatu, Renegade barbecue and the Blue Pointe at its Seminole Paradise Hollywood property, but noted that it was waiting on approval from the Seminoles' tribal council before making an announcement. And that approval has been awaiting an updated compact.
