There's a Boston Pizza downtown Toronto (or at least there was) and I'm fairly certain the only people who eat there are suburbanites before a Jay's/Leafs/Raptors game or concert. Not even exaggerating or trying to be disparaging. It's on the same level as Applebees if not lower in terms of family food. At that point may as well save money and just get fast food.

I doubt I'd ever pay to eat at Swiss Chalet, but end up there at least once a year with my parents in suburban Calgary. It's not great, but not terrible either. The vibe is a bit depressing and the clientele tends to either be young suburban families or retirees - at least at this location. There's a few downtown Toronto locations left, but I see them doing most of their business for the lunch crowd. Based on location alone.

Regarding Boston Pizza, I ate there last summer for the first time in ages, and did it ever suck. Not sure if it was just this particular location or if the whole chain has gone downhill.

Their food is all basically microwaved or reheated from frozen so I would say it's not that one particular location.

I actually don't mind Sheraton Centre for what it is, it just needs to be scrubbed/maintained every once in a while so it doesn't look dumpy.

Generally I agree with this. However sometimes you might be in a new city for a conference or something, or an airport, and don't have much time to explore. At times like that I appreciate that I know exactly what I'm going to get at any given Starbucks on the continent, for example.

As soon as I find myself with free time to wander around I'll stop looking for anything too familiar though.

I would take Applebee's over Boston Pizza any day, Applebee's has far superior food!

Uh... Did you know there is a Résidences Soleil worse than the one in Laval (in my opinion)?

You're thinking of Jim Treliving, he didn't start Boston Pizza, but acquired it and while he has grown the business the quality of their product has gone downhill on his watch.
