I've gone Berlin AMS YC and it was fine. No problem with language at the airport and was easy enough to find your way around. Maybe they have something like the Calgary Airport white hats that you could look into that could help your grandparents through? I flew with KLM and got a good deal on the flight, it was nowhere near full and they are a great airline.
