I'm sure the Arabic community will love this name. "Zibbi" means "my —" in Arabic. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Zibbi. The spelling isn't the same but it's close enough!

No matter what we do, the aboriginal people will never be happy, so why bother? They didn't even accept the invitation to the announcement.

Kissing — to people who will never be satisfied aside, here is the video:

At 0:05, they show the placement of heritage buildings, 0:44 building usage, 1:05 the districts, and 1:17 when they show the height of the buildings and fly-through at 1:17.

Looks like a whole new downtown!

"We"? "They"? You've got the whole world pretty neatly divided up there.

Considering how Windmill has been putting so much effort consulting the Algonquins separately from the rest of the public (likewise with the City and LRT, "Pimisi" station anyone?) and how the government has a "Indian Affairs" department (or the new, more politicly correct "Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada"), I'd say there has been a "neat divide" well before I made the comment.

If it were up to me, we would all pay the same taxes and receive the same services. You don't see me crying about the — my French and Irish ancestors had to go though.

You can take the Pimisi out of the Zibi, but you can't take the Zibi more than one kilometre away from Pimisi (station)!

Futuristic pod cars being considered for Domtar site
http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/futuristic-pod-cars-being-considered-for-domtar-site

Quote:
The former Domtar site, now known as Zibi, is still a wasteland of shuttered industrial buildings on islands and shoreline along the Ottawa River. Within years, developers say, it will be transformed into a green and vibrant waterfront community where people will live, work and play. And that community could have a futuristic touch.

Jonathan Westeinde, a partner of developer Windmill, says the company is considering building a personal pod transportation system that would allow people to “zip around” the 37-acre site in individual, automated cars on an elevated monorail system.

Company officials have travelled to Sweden to look at examples of the personal pod transportation system there, he said.

Westeinde called personal pods an “emerging trend” in rapid transit.

The system could provide a link between the LRT in Ottawa and the bus system in Gatineau, he said, that would connect people to the community of Zibi, located on Albert and Chaudiere Islands and the shores of Gatineau on former Domtar lands.

The pods operate on demand, not on a schedule — more like a space-aged taxi service than a bus or train. Each pod would hold about six people, similar to a gondola, and travel from the Ontario and Quebec sides of the river to the community.

The Jetson-like transportation system could be a key to the development’s zero carbon plan.

Personal rapid transit, as it is known, is highly accessible, user-responsive, as well as environmentally friendly, according to a European Union study.

Westeinde said personal pods are among the “novel transportation strategies” being considered for the site. Developers are also looking at water taxis.
Paging Franky!

honestly given the timeframe of the project a rigid prt system seems like a waste of money. In all likelihood they will be rendered obsolete by googlecars within the next few decades.

I'd prefer developers and planners focus on designing for the future of automated taxis than waste a whole lot of capital on fragmented systems.

It's actually not that far off from French slang for the same member: ''zizi''.

I don't see it as a huge problem though...

But all of this does speak to the need to focus test names like these.

Pimisi is most definitely a dumber name choice than Zibi.

Such undercurrents of ignorance and old school Canadian racism:

too satisfy the Algonquins.
Yup! That's the Canada I know. Grew up in a small town with a large First Nations population- the — I've heard, disgusting.

We have this facade about Canada.

Oh —? You appropriated one of our words to name a billion dollar development of the landmark neighbourhood that could represent the indigenous Nations in the capital of this federation- putting condos for the upper middle class and elites; but it's cool- other opportunities, other opinions, don't matter cause — the Natives am I right?

Hopefully, when the time comes to develop Victoria Island we do it right and it's not an after thought- do I have any faith in that? Not really.

Learn your history...
----
Though I do support this development and would love to live here- just raising my voice in response to this kind of talk

Don't really like the name Zibi but it sounds like one of those abbreviated neighbourhood names like Soho or Nolita. The "Distillery District" has a cooler vibe to it though. "Let's go to Zibi to grab a bite to eat." Doesn't have the same ring to it. Perhaps they should just call it the River District in English, Quartier de la rivière in French, and Zibi in Algonquin. Or just the Zibi District. I would've liked it if they made reference to the industrial history of the area, whether the pulp mills or electricity facilities. I question whether names like Pimisi or Zibi resonate with the average Ottawa resident.

Until Tuesday, Windmill hadn’t been linked to the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats. But Jeff Westeinde confirmed the company is a partner with the Rendez Vous LeBreton Group, which includes the Ottawa Senators, in a bid to build “a major event centre for sports and entertainment performances” as well as residential and commercial development and green space on the 21.6-hectare site.
This news is so comforting. I feel even more confident about the Senators bid. Windmill and Trinity are putting their stamp on Ottawa.

It's not about "kissing —" it's about what's fair. The aboriginal people of Canada were almost completely disenfranchised by colonialism - it is only right that we meaningfully consult with them about their land.

Having said that, I don't much like the name "Zibi" - it sounds like a refreshing drink.
