Thanks for sharing that article. Disappointed I missed his speech, but I certainly don't agree with it. I don't know what it will take for people to realize that the dam cannot be removed.

What is it with Ottawa & Gatineau and the fetish in preserving every square inch of waterfront as sacred green space?

Oh you are wrong. The dam can be removed, but the results are not what people think will happen. Up river of the dam would never be the same and levels would drop dramatically. Plus, getting Hydro Quebec to agree to this is the most impossible part of the proposition.

As for Moriyama, I believe the only thing 'idiotic' would be to take this privately owned land and do nothing with it. Bringing in shops, cafes and condos opens the space to many more people than a polluted field of grass. Its much easier for people to got to a built up area than a NCC inspired area that has no parking or bus stops. Just my thought.

I was at that presentation... very cool and informative about everything regarding the design of the War Museum.

I did however need to bite my tongue when the discussion switched over to the Chaudieres Lands and some First Nations and Moriyama conversed about the lands and how it should be kept a "sacred site"...

I agree that it is technically possible, I just don't think it's feasible due to the fluctuations in water levels ect.. And I agree with you, for the land to remain as is a shame.

Apparently windmill will be releasing more detailed plans today.
Has anybody else heard of this?

The Mayor alluded to this on Twitter this morning:

Quote:
Windmill development Chaudiere announcement; meeting regarding Canadian Little League championships; stakeholder meetings; @REDBLACKS video
And it was mentioned rather briefly on the Windmill feed last week:

Quote:
@OttawaCitizen What’s in a name indeed… stay tuned for exciting news Tuesday!
UPDATE: Windmill just posted another mention of a "big announcement":

Quote:
Today we have a big announcement to share with you! Stay tuned for details. #OttNews
As for what they will be discussing/showing, I haven't seen/heard anything specific...

Nice. I'm still worried that their transit plan is just an exercise in putting labels on a map and a little weak in real infrastructure.

It's too bad because the success of this project really depends on this area being a mass transit node. I wish they'd be courageous enough to pre-build a subway tunnel parallel to Taché when they excavate and build foundations for these buildings.

I prefered the name the isles.
Nice video, gives the project a little more texture and perspective.

Windmill launches 'renewal' project, to be called Zibi

Elizabeth Payne, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: February 24, 2015, Last Updated: February 24, 2015 1:09 PM EST

Executives and public officials gathered today to officially launch the re-development project for Albert and Chaudiere islands.

Representatives of Windmill Development Group and Toronto’s Dream Unlimited Corp. were joined by NCC CEO Mark Kristmanson, Gatineau Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.

Windmill Developments has an ambitious plan for the 15-hectare site that would see three million square feet of new building — largely residential — and would include condos as high as 15 storeys, numerous parks, a hotel, stores, restaurants and loft-style offices, and a developed waterfront on the Gatineau side of the project.

The development plans are not without opposition.

Renowned architect Douglas Cardinal has filed an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board over the city’s approval of Windmill Developments’ rezoning application for the islands, which he says are sacred to the Algonquin people.

I agree, The Isles was much better... far more descriptive and intuitive.

I like Zibi, it has a vernacular connection. The Isles was too generic it could be anywhere in the world. I'm just happy it's not Manhattan-inspired.

Zibi? That is the worst name I've heard... This whole area of town is going to be riddled with these jokes? Zibi? Pimisi? Urgh... I feel like naming a single condo building isn't as bad as at the end of the day, a lot of people (other than SSP enthousiasts) won't actually allude to the building as "TriBeCa" or whatever, but a whole "community" or "project".. that's a different story..

Is this the winning name they had from their competition a couple of months ago or did they scrap that altogether and just decide on Zibi by themselves?

I like "zibi". It's short, distinctive, and reflects the area.

IMO sounds like a name for a restaurant or bar!
