New Proposal for Sunnybrook Plaza | Urbantoronto.ca

Quote:
The proposed development would feature 13 and 19-storey towers with a combined 426 residential units, made up of 71 one-bedroom, 201 one-bedroom plus dens, 56 two-bedroom and 98 two-bedroom plus dens. Rising to respective heights of 216.5 feet and 164 feet, the two towers would step back from a base building with a predominant height of eight storeys, articulated with stepbacks and setbacks at various heights. The base building would contain residential units on floors 2-8, second floor green roofs flanking a 707 square-metre outdoor amenity area and a 1,014 square-metre indoor amenity space on levels 2 and 3

You know, for once, I'd rather not see balls.

The Calgary Tower is starting to look dated. I think they should reclad the observation deck with a different colour, as it is it looks straight from the 80's.

Edit: On a second thought, maybe red is fine, it kinda gives it a "iconic" look. I'm afraid it would be bland if they were to change the colour to, let's say, gray or white. Maybe it's just the material I don't like.

The colour is fairly important to Calgary, though. Edmonton has largely used blue to represent itself and Calgary has used red.

The Calgary Tower originally had a yellow band, painted red during renovations in 2006 or so. I think I prefer it with yellow, all-red is a bit much. It would also look good with a glazed finish.

Which is kind of confusing given the political associations with the colours would suggest the reverse.

But yeah, either way I wouldn't change the tower. Not that I find it particularily beautiful, but it is what it is.

^Yes!!!

As much as it is a part of the Olympic legacy. It really has lost its appeal for me. I can't even get it to show up in the diagrams page any more because it is listed as 'Observation' which isn't one of the options to select when searching the structures.

Select tower and it will show up in the diagrams. That's how I get the CN Tower to show up in the Toronto diagrams.

Not sure what you are talking about?

Edit: Ok I didn't check the previous pages... But I wouldn't hold my breath for a project like this to see the light of the day

The Calgary Tower just seems pointless now that it's cheek by jowl with towers of equal or greater height. I also agree with Trans Canada, the all-red look is too much... it's just damn ugly now. Seeing it in that rendering above just makes it look like a balding, bespectacled, middle-aged accountant standing in between two skinny-jeaned hipster kids.

I kind of like the Calgary tower, since it serves as a reference as the point in time when Calgary became optimistic and ambitious. That it should be overshadowed by much grander, taller buildings is kind of the point.

A similar analogy - although for a much bigger city and a much bigger building - is the Oriental Pearl TV tower in Shanghai. In 1994, to the locals, it probably seemed out of this world, but who knew that it would be usurped within a decade by much taller, grandiose towers in a building frenzy that few would have ever experienced?

I have no doubt the project is serious, I was refering to the height... But a, let's say 150 m new highrise in QC would still be great if for some reason they couldn't go ahead with the 275 m proposal.

Yes the new version is decidedly less ball like. Now the entire thing just looks like the tower is literally — a —.

I grudgingly accept the heritage value of the Calgary Tower. However, the fact that we're speaking to socio-economic history rather than anything to do with architectural history says something... it's an artifact of the time when Calgary was basically Regina with big dreams.

The CN Tower in Edmonton is an infinitely better example of midcentury modern design that also happens to be a clear statement of upwardly mobile civic ambition.
