Yup, people are fearful of "the great unknown", but when they get exposed to it, somehow it becomes nostalgic (like the "neon of the yesteryears"). Northwest coasters are truly cut off from the rest of the world: a lot of big city stuff is considered too exotic and gimmicky for people to accept. I see nothing wrong with an ad screen in the sky. If I don't want to see it, I simply look away.

Most people in the past would be too worried about their bread and butter to bother about what the big corporations installed in the downtown district. Otherwise the neon culture on Granville street would NOT have become a reality in the first place.

I find it hilarious how many people are offending by ads being on video screens downtown. Umm, really? Should we also strip adds from public transit since they are so offensive? Especially when the said company built the tower and has their HQ inside the very same tower, go ahead and play some of your ads!

The funny thing is, if they are interesting enough giant video screens and or neon advertisements actually do become popular points of interest. There are many famous spots here in Japan that are just that. Doesn't seem to offend anyone, and it helps bring nightlife to the areas they are located in.

Vancouver is super dark for half of the year, and it is proven that bright light stimulation during such periods actually does improve people's mental state of mind, so why do we always want to keep our city so dark and grim?

That being said, i fully support using energy saving / low energy technology for such screens and signs.

I saw that the solar panels were floodlit last night - in red and there may have been white and blue too.

I am definitely pro this screen, but getting rid of the ad clutter in cities can hugely improve the livability. Sao Paulo was very brave to ban all ads back in 2007 and over 70% of all people find it now a much more pleasing place to live in. Would be interesting to see something similar happen in places like Hong Kong or everywhere in Japan.

That's consistent with the presentation boards you reposted on Monday, which indicate that the solar panels will be floodlit by colour programmable LEDs.

haha, actually, that video to me makes it feel like those areas have lost a lot of their character. I would hate for Japan to go that extreme of removing their sign culture. Osaka / Tokyo without their bright lights and funky signs would be a sad loss.

I am sure 70% of Vancouver was also happy when Granville Street lost nearly all of its lights and signs, but wait a few decades and I am sure more and more people in Sao Paulo will say "you know what, this district looks a lot more interesting in those old pictures with all of the signs!"

I agree, you don't want signs and video billboards littered everywhere, but a few key districts (such as entertainment areas / high density commercial areas) do benefit from having a bright lights / sign culture. Especially downtown.

PS, we are not talking about highway roadside McDonalds and Gas Station signs here.

Is this what you would recommend that New Yorkers do to Times Square and Broadway then? Do you equate living with sleeping only?

Seems that Metro-One got the point better than you without a huge hyperbole.

The video you posted approvingly depicts the sanitization of mostly high density commercial districts. You also said that "Sao Paulo was very brave to ban all ads."

So, the question was not hyperbolic but logical.

Sounds like you're thinking of Shinjuku. Those streets at night are amazing.

The Georgia Street side of the office tower is a scene of controlled chaos as they get more glass installed. We can now see a grey framed door where I presume you'd exit the atrium onto Richards Street (down a set of steps).

Do you mean Shinjuku on Shibuya? Latter is interesting at night, but I hated how noisy it is.

Anyways, we are getting a bit OT here...

Everything has a balance. No need to ban anything when there is none to speak of. Let Telus Garden have its screen; it's part of the original design isn't it?

I trust this scene explains the need for the temporary stairs/entrance way installed on Richards street. It serves as the only entrance to the building at this point.

Here are a couple of different angles around the office tower, both looking across Seymour Street.

It's a shame the metal edge on the canopy has to be so wide. It blocks the "rib" effect quite a bit.
I wonder what will clad the cinderblock walls on the podium? Some type of stone?

Yup - that was solved with a response to the PriceTags post.

But it didn't answer the question of why the shrubs were planted to block the sidewalk, and - behold - the planted were later removed and the sidewalk is being extended down to the Kingston Hotel.

I am happy to report that I was able to walk on the new sidewalk today from the corner down to the Kingston. I'll bet the owner of the Kingston is happy.

The Kingston is starting to remind me of the old building at the centre of the plot to '*Batteries not Included', where it was going to be demolished for a full block development, but survives at the end.
