Looks like they raised the crane closest to Robson Street (on the left). It gives a better sense of the impending height of the condo tower. I'm guessing that the final height will be a little over twice what we see now. I hope I can still get it all in one shot by the time it tops out.

BTW, I was at the open house about the sign that they want to operate on the office tower over Georgia Street. I was able to glean a couple of things from the people there. They acknowledge that they have taken a bit of a chance in building the sign first and are counting on city hall to approve the sign by-law amendments based on input from the public after the meeting tonight. The amendments referred to on the information boards were rather vague so I got clarification that they will be specific to the exact specifications of the Telus sign. Kind of like a custom amendment. At least that's my understanding coming away from the meeting tonight.

Only Westbank could get away with something like that. Nothing like favoured nation status to get away with whatever you please.

Regarding those led lights on the overhang. They do in fact change colour. I walked by and saw a rainbow of colour

Also sounds vaguely like TELUS ordering massive signs for BC Place Stadium before a deal was signed, then getting rejected.

Why do they even need a bylaw exception for the screen? There is no residential buildings in the direction of the screen. It's just offices that are empty when they turn it on. The Georgia is already two blocks down from Telus Garden and it won't be bright, so I will be very surprised if they don't get the permission they are looking for.

It's Vancouver. Any tiny thing that emits a bit of light, sound or block mounains are deemed offensive.

If the developer and City doesn't go through this, the New Yaletown folks may bring this case to court and we could end up having an abandoned projector screen.

I dunno it brings up some good points. Why exactly are we wanting to bend over backward to allow this building to project ads in our face? The "other cities allow it" isn't good enough for me.

Be careful. Lights and ads count as culture to a lot of people on this forum.

I'm actually indifferent to the proposal, I just thought the hyperbole was a bit much. "Scores of families will suffer".

i think lights and things like NEON signs are great for a city. i love old Granville Street, many a decade ago, with more NEON then Las Vegas. i love, just love NEON myself. that glow that LED's just cant reproduce; nothing but actual NEON can look like that.

i wouldn't like that screen showing Ads though. i see enough Ads in the day i don't need and don't want TV Ads on the side of a building. a TV screen showing interesting colours, patterns and different kinds of designs, that wouldn't be bad.

Lights are psychologically stimulating and create excitement. There's a reason night clubs have flashing lights and lasers of many different colours. In scientific terms, it turns people up. It doesn't matter if the lights are ads or not. And with a city's downtown supposed to be the big, exciting part of the city, the more lights the more people get that sense when they're there.

Yes clearing Granville of its fabulous neon heritage was one of the worst decisions the City ever made.

There is a big difference though between a big glowing VOGUE sign and a big TV cycling advertisements.

I hope the city doesn't rush through this decision. One of the points that CityHallWatch makes is actually quite relevant: The Councillors just unanimously voted to have the city develop an outdoor lighting strategy for future development. It wouldn't make any sense to approve this before City staff has time to present a plan to Council.

Edit: From what I've read it seems like there's still conflicting info out there about whether or not there is any possibility of ads. It'd be nice to hear some clarity on this.
