Out of Ottawa/Gatineau's 442 towers 35 meters or more, built and UC, there is a nearly even split between towers in the inner city area vs. suburban towers, with a slight edge to the number of suburban towers (too much to count, but an approx 200/243 split for suburban). One of the regions' five 100 meter+ buildings are in the suburbs (Minto Metropole - 109 meters).
Out of Calgary's 353 towers 35 meters or more, built and UC, 293 are in the downtown/Beltline/Mission city core, and 60 are in the suburbs, mostly concentrated along the 201 C-train Line in the NW and SW quadrants of the city. All towers over 100 meters are in the city core, the tallest suburban tower is Ovation at 98 meters.
Out of Edmonton's 277 towers 35 meters or more, built and UC, 235 are in the inner city (North side [Downtown, Oliver, Rossdale, Cromdale] South side [Strathcona, U of A]), and 42 are in the suburbs. All towers over 100 meters are in the city core, the tallest suburban tower is Southgate at 71 meters.
The difference is quite stark. While Calgary and Edmonton are highly concentrated in the city centre, Ottawa has a concentration in the regional centre (Ottawa inner city, Gatineau inner city), with the majority of towers in the suburban area. This difference marks the fact that while Ottawa has had decades of steady growth leading to gradual urbanization, Edmonton and Calgary have had decades of rapid growth leading to heavy suburbanization. Boom and bust cycles seem to not be very conducive to suburban development unfortunately. However, it seems like a renewed push for suburban development is happening in Calgary. From what I hear, the Currie Barracks and Westbrook proposals are going to be incredible, both including buildings up to/slightly over 100 meters tall. They'll be released later this year.
