Capacity similar to last summer, but overall, more widebodies across the Atlantic. That's what I'm looking forward to.

United Summer Changes

United is slowly beefing up its summer scheds.

They seem to be doing it more gradually this year.

DEN - mainline returning on 1 of the 4 daily flights

SFO - E75s on 2 of the 3 daily flights

ORD - mainline returning on 1 of the 4 daily flights

IAH - all 739s on the 3 daily flights

Nice to see our transborder and international flights get some increases.

I'm still surprised that FRA hasn't changed for the summer again.

YYC compared to YEG

VISITORS
UK 80,500 ; 13,500
Germany 33,600 ; 5,500
France 10,000 ; 2,500
Other Western Europe 53,000 ; 10,700

TOTAL O&D
UK 301,122 ; 64,291
Germany 109,338 ; 24,657
France 40,159 ; 15,156
Other Western Europe 207,062 ; 70,194

TOTAL O&D
Total European Union 643,751 ; 177,770 (so about 3.6 times larger).

And just to show how these markets compare to YVR is about 1.2 million

I'm sure Banff plays a huge role in the numbers, but I would also suggest business takes a nice chunk of this, too.

It's a combination of three things. Banff, business travellers, and people coming and going from other western Canadian cities, Edmonton among them.

Tourism and two hub airlines.

Hubs are a major factor in generating numbers, take a look at Cleveland.

From hub to non hub by United and the numbers fell dramatically.

These market figures have nothing to do with hub or non hub operations. These figures are passenger totals broken down as visitors and total O&D. Whether the passengers fly direct to YYC or via an intermediate stop.

Banff or not, these figures show just how much larger the YYC market is. Banff obviously plays more of a role in the visitors numbers, which is 5.5 x larger than YEG.

In other news. Just had a look at UK Stats for November and December.

YYC-LHR grew a pretty decent 12% in November and 7% in December.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know what O&D was and had to google it

So those O&D numbers are just people coming to and from Calgary, and doesn't include people transferring planes or passing through. The difference is then mostly business traffic, which makes total sense.

O&D includes all people starting their trip from one city/region and destined for another city/region and does not take into account travel path. Consequently YYC-YYZ-LHR is the same as YYC-LHR, both count as 1 O&D pax. However YVR-YYC-LHR is not counted in YYC-LHR pax stats. Clear as mud.

Don't forget Lake Louise too which takes another chunk within the Banff catagory.
It's all about the ski hills and the outdoor hikes.

Good numbers on LHR loads, I think we are truly blessed that a city of our size can accommodate those 13 weekly flights to europe. Very handsome stats and comparisons to see. I also believe we actually do have a genuine O+D traffic flow to LHR. Business wise I am not as sure but definitely the lower classes, enough to warrant 3 flights a day starting this summer.

Speaking of which I think today is the last day of BA 787 ops before switching back to the old machine. What started off as a huge media fanfare has ended up becoming a dud. Definitely a shame that a wealthy rich city like ours, people don't seem to recognize BA as a worthy enough alternative, too many AC loyalists..
I'd be curious to see what the average loads were for those J cabins during the 787 tenure.

Waiting anxiously for this mysterious yet probably unsurprising announcement tomorrow at Calgary Chamber of Commerce, right?? It is long overdue fact that we are now capable of handling 2 asian cities on a daily year round basis.
Just imagine it was something insanely out of left field like a latin american city or even the middle east. It would be a shell shocker lol. (Mid east is a remote possibility but not impossible)

"My Banff includes Lake Louise!"

A new slogan in the event Lake Louise ever tries to separate and form its own National Park.

The thing is too, Calgary is also the Eastern Terminus of the Rocky Mountaineer on many of their trips. That is a pretty big thing downunder. Aussies love the whole train trip through the Rockies coupled with an Alaska Cruise. Big advertising for that. Although, I have to say, recently I notice more and more of the itineraries do a Rocky loop from/to YVR only. Regardless, Calgary is certainly the main gateway to the Rockies from the East.

Just got back from a Europe trip. Flew out to LHR, and home via FRA, both on AC. Was impressed by the loads both ways, planes pretty much full. There was a pretty big component of South Asian/ Middle East traffic transiting both ways. I suspect these folks are driving a lot of the growth on the European routes out of YYC.

Funny you should mention that. I was having a chat with these chaps in Melbourne and the fellow on the right is one of those Aussies that took the Mountaineer.

I don't post often so I'm not sure how to load pictures, but over on the Saskatoon/Regina Air Service page is a post about Canada Jetlines anticipated route network at 16 aircraft. Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Hamilton as hubs, and does not include Calgary at all. A bit crazy in my opinion. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=151982&page=43

Aussies travelling to Canada are like Canadians travelling down under. A quick trip to the nearest coast. a bit of travel up and down and if real adventurous a trip inland...

Most Canadians don't get past Sydney/Melbourne. Most Aussies don't get past the mountainous west...

Yeah, I'll believe it when the first flight actually happens. They've already run into problems with their original plan to fund the airline and are now seeking other options to get off the ground:

Quote:
Canada Jetlines Ltd. (“Jetlines”) announces that it has terminated the previously announced amalgamation agreement dated September 12, 2014, as amended, with Inovent Capital Inc. (“Inovent”) (TSX-V: IVQ.P).

Jetlines will continue to pursue its business and growth objectives and the opportunities that are available to it.

“We continue to believe that our business model represents an attractive value proposition for both investors and price-sensitive passengers and this is supported by parties that we have spoken to. This is an exciting time for Jetlines as we take aggressive steps to change the face of the industry. Jetlines will pursue other compelling opportunities available to it and we look forward to commencing operations in the near term.” said Jim Scott, Chief Executive Officer of Jetlines.

- See more at: http://www.jetlines.ca/2015/02/06/ca....FrpjnsdX.dpuf
I can't help but laugh at the "attractive value proposition" for investors. Uh huh, start-up airline in a sparsely populated and incredibly large country, with two very well established airlines that will make your life hell right from the start. Sounds like a can't lose proposition! TAKE MY MONEY!

Banff has got to be huge. Why else would airports list their departure gates as "Calgary/Banff"? I've seen that several times over the past many years.

If I recall, Banff is 6-7 times the number of visitors as Jasper National Park and i'd be a huge number of those are from overseas through YYC.
