TRUE NORTH SQUARE.
Wow, we really need this project in our city and badly.
This is the most exciting project for Downtown Winnipeg in decades and could be the catalyst for so much more investment there in the future.
Finally I am seeing a well thought out well designed complex that would be a perfect fit for us on those bare cement lots.
Firstly, we see 3 signature buildings that will be placed in a dead zone yet near the MTC Centre and newly expanded Convention Centre.
What is most spectacular is that while all 3 buildings have a so called individual style, they somehow show cohesiveness with all front curves forming a welcoming inclusive feel that brings harmony and style so desperately needed and never see before in our city downtown!
Can anyone think of 3 mid or hi-rises that compliment each other well>? Lakeview Square is a far stretch...ok but very harsh on the concrete and little in the design aspect. There are a few well know places to eat nearby and with this complex and some recent others, this will make it a buzzing place year round! I sure hope Mr. Chipman will not let the mayor and his silly remarks ruin this opportunity we so need. Laugh if you will be he is The Donald Trump of Winnipeg. Look at what has been accomplished and is still out there to be done?

If the end result looks anything like the video, I certainly agree. It's very cool and will end up bringing people to the downtown through permanent residents and hotel stays. The outdoor aspect would see people naturally wanting to be in that space and it connects the Convention Centre and MTSC in a natural way.

The president of the Chamber has said Bowman must publicly apologize to Chipman for the project to move forward.

I voted for Bowman (full disclosure) but what I hear about him, Im not sure I'd hold my breath on a public apology. Lets hope he does the right thing.

I am retired after a long career in the public sector. Worked in the economic development field, including urban development issues in Winnipeg (going back to the creation of the Forks, the Portage Place monstrosity, the MTScentre and many others). Like a lot of you I love this town and I feel the future is fairly bright. I am probably slightly left of center politically although I have seen too much public funding get pissed away to feel cavalier about it.

Look forward to chiming in if I can add value or offer an alternative perspective.

b) adds a bit of height and volume to the western downtown skyline
c) adds students and residents to the U of W campus area

I'd say it's a great addition. Certainly good news for the Stella's next door!

The U of W surface lot fencing seemed to go up on Feb 1.

It would also be interesting to know if the plan is to continue to house students in Lions Place as the U of W has been doing or if this new project is intended as a replacement for that housing.

No, it's not meant as a replacement. The Lion's housing is traditional, dormitory-style student housing with common kitchens, rec areas, etc. This new building is apartments that *could* be rented by students, but will be available to anyone who can pay. Some units are affordable and some are up-market. It won't be run like a student residence building.
